Internet TV via HTTP/RMTP connection can achieve high level performance with Content Delivery Network.

If the video is stream via oversea where there is no Content Delivery Network to speed up the performance, the Oversea backbone could cause a bottleneck. Packet lost over long distance could be one of the factors.

One of the reason why Singtel don't dare to advertise their Unlimited Connection speed as 1Gbit/s as oversea backbone may not produce such performance.

I see, make sense. Tech also told me that not possible to get 1Gbps too. Once fully buffered the video is in the machine so when I watch half way and later I can still watch from where I stopped.

Yes u can but the phone has to be at the ONT which sometime can be noisy. For video streaming from overseas sites, such sites may be lack of technology so may have some delay so even u are on Unlimited plan u may be still facing the same issue.

Hi everyone,

Would like to know if 200 Mpbs is enough for the following requirements:

-family of 4
-gadgets include 4 smartphones, 1 desktop, 2 laptops, 2 tablets, 1 tv
-will be using it mainly for web browsing, video streaming (will be subscribing to a vpn provider for my football matches and dramas)
-will be using it once in a while for casual gaming (MMORPG, Dota 2, CS) and torrent

I will be signing up with Singtel as number porting is not supported by ViewQuest yet. Any kind advises are welcome.

Also to point out that there will be about 8 - 9 Machine are using Wireless.
Wireless Stream are shared connection CSMA/CA.

Most hardware could be just a Wireless N device, so typical 2.4GHz 20MHz Wide Wireless N yield about 40~70Mbps.

And splitting the connections to 8 device (if all is 2.4GHz device) the usable bandwidth if all under heavy load will be lower.

Also need to factor out what application they are gonna use.
Most people now use their tablet or smart phone to stream videos from Funshion PPTV PPS etc, all this connection is mostly P2P based.

P2P connection can't guarantee that speed will be always fast. It requires the peers aka Neighbors to stream over to you.

So in reality, if you are going to use the internet service over Wireless N, anything above 100mbit/s is useless.

Some argument that Wireless AC router can yield better result, but you have to keep in mind that your end device aka smartphone laptop etc must be Wireless AC compliance so that you can take advantage of the bandwidth improvement.

So take it as this logic, You have a Wide bottleneck on the water bottle, but water is consume with a Straw, lesser water can get into your mouth. What if you use a pipe that is as big as the bottleneck, it will be at 100% speed to drink the water.

Most ISP is just marketing their premium package to yield better profits while most people are actually underutilized the connection 80% of the time.

Torrent will fall under another usage pattern as not all torrent will always 100% utilized your connection speed. If torrent via wireless , speed will be just capped at the wireless technology limits.

I thought of going over to My Republic 200Mbps since it cost the same at $39.00, with the main attraction of the free VPN Teleport to attach a media box for my retired parents to watch internet tv.

My primary usage will be just internet surfing and tv entertainment, no online games and maybe add 2 ip cctv in future.

Please advise if 200Mbps is good enough for me?
If you also have feedback on My Republic's VPN service, kindly share too.

200mbps is enough.. But with MR recent customer service level... Not sure to recommend them or not.

Is there an alternate ISP that offers 200Mbps with free VPN I could go to?
Not sure even if I get the VPN does it mean I can stream content from worldwide to those media boxes such as Xiaomi TV box etc..

More than enough unless everything is streaming at once. Even then the router will be the bottleneck instead because it is wireless.

Change to 300Mbps on M1, $29 only.
