Is my graphics card dead?

Hi all,

I used to get some red spots on the screen while gaming since the last two weeks. Today when I booted the PC, this is what I see. Tried driver update, moving to a different slot etc. Is my GFX card dead? Its a AMD HD4870 BTW.

Seems to be the case, I removed it and started using the on board card.

Now I have a new problem, there is a high pitched noise coming through the speakers after I boot into Windows. No noise at start up menu or in BIOS.

btw on your gpu did you try diff wire? cause the last i have such issue i change the wire then can le leh

You mean a different power cable? Or Video cable? The same Video cable works fine with the on board gpu btw.

Any ideas on what could be causing the high pitched noise?

oh ok then probably the cable as for the high pitched not sure leh... i used to have it too but suddenly just gone by itself leh

Tried changing speaker cable, even speakers - still the same. There is no audio coming out of the speakers except for the high pitched noise. Tried uninstalling and re-installing audio drivers. No change.

Is my board faulty? Where to take an Asrock board for RMA?

Is your speaker USB-powered? If yes, likely static noise.

Nope. Its got its own power supply. Anyway, I plugged in a USB sound card and connected the speakers to it. No problem. Same speakers, same cables.

Mobo issue?

I noticed that the new cards like the R280X and above have 8 pin power connectors, whereas my PSU has only six pin connectors. Is it possible to use my current PSU with some converters or do I need to buy a new PSU?

The PSU is a 750W btw.

Hmmm here are the list of brands and their description iirc:
Msi: quiet and average performer and price
Powercolor: cheapest and average performer
Gigabytes: slightly louder, runs cooler abit, average price and slightly above average performer
Asus: most ex, highest performer, slightly cooler and not so loud too.
Sapphire:
Dual x: performs slightly below average
Vapour: average performance
Toxic: most ex sapphire, but performs above average

And you can use a 6 pin to 8 pin connector too

Thanks for those recommendations. I did a bit more searching and it appears that the R9 270X is pretty decent for playing at 1920x1080 resolutions. The price difference between the 280X and 270X is over 100 SGD, and I am not sure if I really need the 280X to play at HD res.

Any thoughts on this? And any good R270X cards to recommend?

hmmm bro that will have to depend. if you plays games like BF4 at 1080p, at max settings, 280x will be recommended, but if you don't mind cranking down the settings to high and slightly lowered framerates ( still smooth), then 270x will be for you. But bro what really matters is whether you are willing to spend the extra money for the extra frames and performance. Do consider properly first before buying hahaha speaking from experience, abit regret buying my 290 since i dont game much anymore, should have just stuck with buying a 270x

The 280X will be good for future proofing, but will I ever need the extra performance at 1080P? I dont play that much, but my son does. I bought a HD4870 in 2008, and I was able to play games like COH, Cities in Motion and World of Tanks at medium to high settings until now.

Perhaps I should just spend the extra cash and get a card which I can use for the next few years instead of being forced to upgrade after a year or two. Decisions decisions

Anyway, Amazon price for the Asus R280X is almost the same as local price for the Asus 270X. I dont mind buying from Amazon if I am getting a better card for the same price.

Any thoughts on importing from Amazon? How does the RMA for Video cards work? Brands like Corsair allow sending the item back to Taiwan for items purchased in the US. Do any of the GPU brands allow local RMA or sending to Taiwan / HK?

Only for EVGA, you send back to Taiwan. But EVGA dun make 280x. So, you gotta send back to USA, which may be ex.. Rather you get it locally. Pay slightly more than amazon for 3 yrs local warranty.

Also, you should decide if you r gonna play upcoming games or stick to whatever you are playing now. Coz as time goes by, games are getting more and more gpu demanding. And if u decide to get a gpu which can cope with current games just nice, it will struggle for upcoming games.

But, all depends on whether u wanna play those games or not.

Of course I would like to play newer games. Even existing games demand more resources after a major patch, such as the recent 9.0 patch to W.o.T. Even my HD4870 was struggling to keep up after that patch.

About the cost of RMA, the local price for an Asus 280X is 519SGD. A 130$ premium over Amazon. What will be shipping cost back to the US if it fails?

i think if you wan to get asus get in singapore ba. If not the RMA procedure is gonna cause you a bomb as compared to saving that $100 in getting in singapore.
