J.J. Abrams commandeers STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS

After months of hopeful speculation, J.J. Abrams has officially signed on to direct Star Trek 2, which is a sequel to 2009's galactic hit that starred Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.

While many assumed he would make the follow-up to his 2009 hit, he would never give a date for the project, or actually say for sure that he would be the one directing. In July, reports elsewhere surfaced that Abrams was "moving towards a commitment" to direct the sequel but his delay had pushed a nervous Paramount Pictures to give Star Trek 2 late June 2012 release date to a G.I. Joe sequel.

According to Vulture, part of the hold-up has been that Alex Kurtzman, who wrote Abrams' first Star Trek with Roberto Orci, has been busy editing and posting Welcome to People, his directing debut at DreamWorks Pictures. We're told that now that Kurtzman is finished with those duties, he is back in his office and the team is ready to work.

Screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are writing the script.

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto and the rest of the main cast are all set to return. The sequel was originally set to come out June 2012, but the film wanted to give the writers enough time to finalize the script.

Director J.J. Abrams' is in the final days of principle photography on Star Trek 2, and it's been widely reported that none of the original Star Trek cast members would be appearing in this sequel. That includes Leonard Nimoy, who played a substantial role in 2009's Star Trek reboot.

Now, though, an off-the-cuff remark has fans speculating that the actor, who turned Vulcan Spock into a sci-fi icon, may actually make an appearance in this upcoming sequel, slated for release in 2013.

On Thursday, Leonard Nimoy was on scene to watch the arrival of experimental NASA shuttle The Enterprise in New York City, where he was interviewed by CNN. The anchor asked if he would be appearing in another Star Trek movie. This was his response.

"Uhh...We're talking. We're talking."

Many fans who've heard this statement speculate that it is far too early for J.J. Abrams to be talking about Star Trek 3. Though, you never know. A cameo is still possible for Star Trek 2, which has most Trekkers and Trekkies excited. Though retired from acting, Leonard Nimoy is next scheduled to return to Fringe sometime before the show ends next year.

Here’s some news that should have Star Trek fans chomping at the bit: director J.J. Abrams premiered the first clip from his upcoming Trek sequel on TBS' Conan. But it’s short…really short.

'Star Trek 2's' Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci to Produce 'Dragonology' for Universal
“It’s got to be really short,” Abrams said of studio Paramount’s instructions to him. “It can’t be longer than three frames,” he claimed his bosses told him.

But Abrams told Conan O'Brien those three frames are indeed from Star Trek Into Darkness, the heavily guarded follow-up to his 2009 Trek reboot.

“This is a scene where Spock…for reasons that you’ll have to see the film to understand, is in a volcano in this crazy suit.”

Star Trek Into Darkness is slated for a May 17, 2013, release and reunites the Enterprise crew from the 2009 film (including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and Zoe Saldana) and adds Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch in a villain role still shrouded in mystery, even though the movie has wrapped.

For Star Trek fans, it’s been a long, difficult wait for the sequel to J.J. Abrams’ hugely successful 2009 franchise reboot. With the theatrical release of Star Trek Into Darkness only a few months away, anticipation is higher than ever, especially after the recent release of the film’s first trailer.

Abrams – like many of his contemporaries – has been pretty secretive regarding his film’s plot details and character arcs, but perhaps the most mysterious element has been the identity of the villainous new character played by Sherlock‘s Benedict Cumberbatch. We know that Cumberbatch is playing a man named John Harrison, but speculation has persisted that this is merely an alias, with his true identity still unknown.

The ambiguity continues in the latest word from Abrams about the film – courtesy of Japan’s GyaO! (via TrekMovie) – but he does drop a bit more insight into the villain’s background and motivation. Here’s what he had to say:

“So this movie doesn’t require you [to] have seen the first movie. The characters are a group of people who have recently come together and find themselves up against this incredibly terrifying force. His name is John Harrison and he is sort of an average – that is what makes him so scary – he is just an average guy who works in an organization called Starfleet, and he turns against the group because he has got this back-story and this kind of amazing secret agenda. After two very violent attacks, one in London and one in the US, our characters have to go after this guy and apprehend him. And it is a far more complicated and difficult thing then they ever anticipated. ‘Into Darkness’ is very much about how intense it gets and really what they are up against.”

What’s most intriguing about Abrams’ comment is the fact that Harrison has a “secret agenda.” That certainly invites speculation regarding whether or not the character will have an eleventh hour reveal as an established figure in the Star Trek mythos. Cue the onslaught of fanboys everywhere crying that this possibility harkens too closely to the finale of The Dark Knight Rises.
