another die die must try ! go eat okonomoyaki in osaka. after u eat that there, you will never want to eat anything like that in singapore again. it simply cannot be compared. totally different standards. like eating chalk and cheese.

since you going there on a student visa i am not too sure about how you can travel or can you buy rail pass. but during your term break there, you might wanna consider getting the seishun 18 kippu (student rail pass)

it cant be used on shinkansen but u can use unlimited local express trains to get from tokyo to osaka. apparently is a 9 hour journey but certain midnight trains qualify for it. pretty fun according to what i heard. might wanna give it a shot this winter when its avaliable

I think u can try for JR pass. they can be kept for a year so buy one in Singapore before you go and activate during your term break.

PS. the picture of hokkaido milk brings back memories... during my trips to japan, i'd overdose on their fresh milk. there was this milk that was twice as thick as normal milk and taste like heavenly cream. i drank so much that i 'lao sai'.

yea ! one weird thing though. alot of milk based products. e.g when i wandered around combinis at night (bad habit, late sleeper and absolutely nothing to do late at night tokyo that can be done without incurring a massive cab bill) in tokyo , i noticed they had all sort of weird milk products.

e.g you'd have your chocolate strawberry and normal milk. just like over here, but they will have all kinds of awesome stuff like mocha flavour, cafe latte flavour. there were some oddballs that really stood out like green tea with milk (not that bad as you can possibly imagine) lipton tea fusion flavours with all kinds of weird fruity flavours.

the one that really takes the cake though, is this uber weird milk drink i had. it had a monkey drawn on the packaging and holding a chocolate rice coated banana. i bought it and drank it. it was the weirdest tasting milk i ever had. seems like it was chocolate coated rice banana flavour. kinda tasted a little like banana split with liquid chocolate form.subsequently i went back and i found that they didnt stock it anymore. a real shame. pretty cool.

totally bizzare experience.

anyone knows what those giant bottles of beer are called in japan ? the like 10X the size of your carlsberg 1 pint green beer bottle kinda size. have always had a unhealthy fascination with those.

milk products aside, the variety of bottled tea is astounding. and their product lines changes every season... you may find the 10 - 20 products all the time, but the remaining 30 - 40 things that you see in vending machines or convenience stores are not going to be there for very long.

those big 2l, 5l (i have seen a 10l ones before) bottles are usually sake. japanese tend to binge more on sake than beer. unless u're talking about those big aluminium kegs... ah... now thinking abt the different seasonal japanese beers....

Here's the famous Ippudo ramen which can be found in ropponggi if i'm not wrong. But there's this branch just right outside my dorm.. Good stuff! Got the Shiro ramen lunch set! 850yen. They have 2 kinds, shiro(tonkutsu based) and aka (spicy i guess?).. makes me so hungry now!

the tau gay is soooo good!!!

gonna go back some other day to try the aka ramen. too expensive to eat such things regularly.

Was at Harajuku the other day to catch the goth lolitas and went to this branch of Kyushu Jangra (Hope I remembered the name correctly. ) It was a long queue.. This chain has several branches ard Tokyo, and the main shop is at akiba. I prefer Ippudo though. If I'm not wrong, both are Kyushu styled ramen. I love tonkotsu ramen!

700yen for this bowl.

Outside Yoyogi Koen, there's this row of street stalls selling snacks. I tried the okonomiyaki and the grilled meat. It's overpriced and doesn't taste good.. nice to look at though..

400yen per stick! O__O

different strokes different folks. no point applying your standards on everyone. its a japan food thread not a japan gourmet michelin star thread. its meant to be a inclusive all kinds of japan food interest type of thread.

includes and consolidate different food from different standards and budgets.

it's like comparing beer and fine wine. they are both alcohol, but they are entirely different ends of the spectrum. people appreciate things in the same manner. to each to his own.

and once again. i must say that not all my food places are Michelin standard or some very expensive food.
there is much more to japan than ur simple ramen, beef bowl and conbini stuff. so many cakes, wagashi and the quality u will never find it in singapore. And they cakes are comparable to the price or not cheaper than singapore(eg bakerzin, canele etc).. and whats the point of sharing all these information. U guys just stick to ur limited knowledge.
