Hey guys, I last posted in the Japan forum a year ago prior to and after my Tokyo trip, and here I am again seeking the advice from u experts

I'm planning a trip to Hokkaido next year around the late May-early June period for a group of ex-classmates. Although I've been to Japan many times, it's always been Tokyo As such, none of us have been to Hokkaido before. We're a group of young adults aged 20, so I don't think we would like to tour in big groups with other people, especially those with families. Especially seeing how our friends have already toured Europe on their own this year, but I understand that first-timers shouldn't go Hokkaido on F&E.

I was thinking whether it's possible to form our own tour group with JTB and just visit certain places to keep within our budget and also not waste time. We're mainly looking for scenic places and places with lots of food ( we have big appetites! ), so could anyone share some tips on which places to visit. Hokkaido is so big I don't even know where to start! I only know Sapporo and Hakodate

Never mind it's ok. I meant like asking JTB to help us hire a bus or something, but well I talked to them and they don't do tie ups with transport companies, so I guess we have to brave the public transport system!

hey, i just came back from hokkaido... it's my first time to Hokkaido (not my first to Japan) and i still go for FnE. More freedom. How many days you are going? My favourite place would be Shiretoko Five Lakes. It's one of the world heritage site. Very nice nature place...

Hey. I've come out with a draft itinerary, similar to isky's, which spans about 12 days. How was FnE for you? My only gripe is having to meet the train timings as a group, since more people means harder to control lol.

can any of u guys drive ? might be more fun to make this a road trip. please remember. japanese law and traffic police have a zero tolerance policy with regards to alcohol and drivers. no alcohol at all for drivers.

Yep some of us can, but we're all new drivers so I don't think it's advisable to drive. Anyway I've done quite a lot of research on public transport and it's quite convenient. Tourist-friendly

Yup ..... even though roads look emopty there are cameras around, and traffic cops. Yes no tolerance...fines are heavy. Although i have heard them to be more lenient to tourists driving (esp with families in tow), but don't take your chances yah ? Stick to speed limit. Anyway they don;t honk at drivers who are slower over there

take my word for it.

anything outside of sapporo. is not convenient for travelling. things like seasonal differences in travel schedules, one bus service a day operating on certain routes. these in themself, act as restraints on your planning.

plus, with public transport, its hard to reach anywhere specific outside of the city, e.g lake toya, the bus just operates from JR-toya on the muroran line and dumps you at the strip of onsen resorts. but thats not just simply toya-go. plenty of lakeside areas (hotel winsdor and other camping grounds) mt usuzan and so much more to explore.driving affords you the flexibility of visiting these areas at your own time own target.

dont worry about driving in sapporo/hokkaido. its ok if you dont speed, obey traffic laws and do some route planning (google maps is useful for things like that) keep a keen eye out for driving. make sure you have adequate rest before driving, and take out the optional insurance. (japanese vehicles are insured under a state program but japanese traffic law does not exclude individuals involved in accidents from liability. the liability/cost is always divided/shared even if the accident is not your fault. optional insurance goes towards covering the liability/cost you may need to bear)

nothing ventured, nothing gained. i drove around biei/furano/asahikawa last year (i am 23) its absolutely fine. nothing to worry about. just dont be reckless.

and i do think if you factor in limited express fees and what not, you are looking at least at something like 8-12k worth of transport cost per person. do a cost-comparison with a 6 seater car or 8 seater van, might be significantly cheaper for you to drive.

There's a special bus tour which goes to Monbetsu and Biei from Asahikawa, so I think that would be quite convenient too. I do find your comment about Lake Toya interesting. The Toya-onsen area is still okay right?

The tour is run by Taisetsu Tours. For 6000yen per person, you will ride a coach which brings you to Kamiyubetsu Tulip Park and Takinoue Pink Moss Park. Admission fee should be included if I'm not wrong. I should be taking up this short tour when I'm there next year for the convenience, since these places are not very accessible by public transport.

I think day 9 would be a mad rush, i think lots of buses and connections to make. I think if you want a leisurely time, stick just to Hakone.
I am really not sure if you can spend a whole day at akihabara ?
And why not 2 days at kyoto ... more time to have slow walks and sit down and enjoy.

i guess his day 9 is package by JTB/ sunrise, so should be alright.

but your 1 day Kyoto trip is really too pack given that you are not staying in Kyoto.

anyway, my itinerary is quite similar to yours in term of route and budget. if you want to save more cost, u got to make your Mt fuji + hakone F&B, and also consider how do you want to travel from Osaka to Tokyo.

UENO and Odaiba is a nice place to visit which you have missed out
