I had asked airsim about the difference between Docomo and SoftBank package. This is their reply below. After much thought, i will be getting Docomo for my wife and SoftBank for myself, in case signals are weak in some areas for one carrier but not the other we are still covered.

==========================
For Japan Docomo it comes with data limit (eg: 1/2/3/5GB) and Japan Softbank comes with unlimited data with fair usage policy.

The difference between the two Softbank 4G data has dailyÂ*500MBÂ*data at 4G speed before the internet access speed slow down and 4G MAX hasÂ*1GBÂ*data. Both package at slower speed remained unlimited data for accessing to WhatsApp, Google App or other App that required less internet bandwidth. The internet speed will be reset back to 4G speed after 0000hrs Singapore time the next day.

For recommendation to casual visitors using GPS/maps and WhatsApps is to purchase the Softbank Max 4G data.

I just returned from Japan, let me share my experience.
To increase our chances of getting signal, I took SoftBank while my wife had Docomo. Throughout our 2 weeks in Japan, we generally had no issue with signals either in cities like Tokyo or Kyoto, or in mountainous regions but this could also be that we are mostly in touristy areas.
My usage was mostly web browsing and Google map GPS, the data limit was sufficient for our use.

I have used Airsim for the past 2 years and am very satisfied with their quality and value so far.

Some hotels have mobile phones you can borrow and take out. It's called Handy and some include SG inside their free-to-call list. Can call mobile phones too.

For me, try this one bro - NTT Docomo is the largest mobile network in Japan, covering more of the country than either AU or SoftBank. I go this!
