JCS japanese classes

anyway does the sensei in JCS teach differently? for those who have attended JCS classes before, how does the teacher teach.. is it through that legendary white book lesson by lesson?

for mine in yr 2007 when i took elem 1, my sensei, nakamura sachie used her own notebook and copy everything on the whiteboard while she teaches...even though she didn't speak much, but her notes are super easy to understand and i think that is the most important!

wondering if all the teachers have a standardized notebook for teaching in JCS or maybe just nakamura sensei has her own secret manual?

i think she is not there anymore so i don't know how the other teachers are like and their teaching techniques... i m more of a person who need notes than practising

i dislike those teachers who just talk and talk and we have to make notes.. if they speak too fast i think i might miss what they said and i m slower in absorbing when someone just plainly explain rather than drawing out and giving examples... .

the legendary white book is still used here in JCS...

i took elementary intensive under kutsuma sachiko sensei who resigned last year... she also teach using such method...

most sensei prepare her notes for teaching so different sensei has different style of teaching but all will be given standard set of notes and homework...

if that is the case, i would not recommend JCS to u...

Overall, i think it's very important to do self-revision, if not, you won't be able to catch up. Regardless of what class you are studying in... A general gauge

JLPT 4: 3-4 hours of self study per week
JLPT 3: 6 hours of self study per week
JLPT 2: Everyday at least 2 hours of self study
JLPT 1: Everyday at least 2-3 hours of self study

even now, i am forcing myself to go for extra classes so that i am really studying, rather than lazing around.

Hi aprilkwan-san,

Based on my experience at JCS elementary back in 2001 and currently (decided that I need a refresher course so as to facilitate pursuing Jap further after so long), I think that different teachers teach differently. Most tend to follow the legendary white book word for word, right down to the exact same example sentences given in it. Some try to group what needs to be taught in a more organized fashion for their classes and supplement additional materials/examples at their own initiative. A rare few (maybe 1 or 2? ) ignore the white book plainly and opt to teach in their own manner, referring to the white book only on occasions.

Most of the teachers I've encountered so far tend to go through the lesson points at a slow pace that's easy for the class to 'digest' with a couple of examples to practice on along the way. I guess what bothers some of my classmates at times are the various expressions that our teacher will mumble to herself from time to time since they have no idea as to what she could be mumbling about. Force of the habit I guess. Hee... ^^

Yup, long break cos need to focus on studies first. ^^

Hmm... I think kinda hard to choose a good sensei at JCS though. Need to really emphasize on the 'try' bit. =x Unless one knows who's good and manages to find out which day/time he/she's teaching at.

Strangely enough, my class this year has gone through change of sensei twice already due to unusual circumstances... Our current sensei is kinda new but we can see that she's trying her best to teach us. =)

The class is quite packed and there are about 30-40+ people, mainly working adults and a few students. Ito sensei mainly teaches in English so it isn't that hard to understand but might be hard to pick up the language.

As Ah keong mentioned, you do have to take notes while the teacher is speaking. But thankfully for the things she writes on the white board, she will wait for you to finish copying.

Overall I think it is a good place to learn, but definitely requires homework on top of the lessons.
