personally i have never joined a marathon or for that matter any race. It just never appealed to me :ROFLMAO:

and the first two years of running was the most difficult, overweight, poor running form and over anxious to see results. what came was self doubt and the accompanying injuries (u name it I probably had it: hip, knee, ankle, shin splints, plantar fasciitis the list goes on)

So i took a long hard look and went back to basics and asked why am i running? I am definitely not getting paid or harbour any hopes of joining the national team. I always ran alone so there was no one to impress either.
I am running to keep fit and healthy and being mobile well into my senior years.

So i started focusing on base aerobic fitness and proper running form. And with it came Z2, cadence and other key building blocks. so for the next two years i really ran slow.. Z2 slow. and surely the pace gradually improved while maintaining the same easy effort for progressive longer run.

the first challenge i set for myself was 3 years ago to be able to run more than 30km without stopping. the challenge was quite easily achieved in a few months. the longest run was probably 35km+.

last year it was being able to run 5km under 20min. that took almost the whole year as I had to learn to run faster which meant longer stride, more body lean and the mechanics that came with it. the feel was very very different from running easy!

this year's challenge is to run 10km under 40min. Not there yet but getting near. And it's harder than I thought. Best currently is under 42mins in end june TT.

I set these yearly challenge to gamify running for me. It's me against myself. And I am glad to say I had ran injury free the last few year. sometime a strain will develop but as i still do bulk of my running easy it has time to recover and to discover what caused that strain in the first place.

long post... but hopefully beginner runners can avoid my pit falls and find their motivation!
What a journey. 42 minutes 10km is consider elite in the amateur world, especially when you call yourself a senior. How old are you?

Bro, good to try and play around, it's quite interesting. Personally, unless if it is Jan - Feb period (still not say very cooling but at least it is decent), can try some active cooling. If at track, set up near inner lane some cups of iced water to pour. It is possible to get you pretty close to 40 mins.

10k optimum temp is around 16 deg C. 5k around 19.

That time i did not know better, go hoot 10k TT aiming for 40 mins and by 7th - 8th km i felt lightheaded, possibly due to the BP or what (and i dont have BP issue). Was pretty warm coz during evening time the sun barely set and still at the horizon. The specific place that i run at is also a concrete jungle, tiled flooring and close to HDB walls etc, ie hot. Probably heat index 37-38 deg C still. 4 min pace. Did not make it. Second try with pouring of chilled water every 400m, solid could hit target. Not really sure if that helped or due to other reasons, but i feel the cooling helps. (also done further late at night and on a cooler night). Literally all my "TTs" i do with active ice cooling with tower to soak and hold the chilled water.

Of coz, properly heat trained folks can just go gun a 35-38 min 10k at 35 deg C heat index by running during the daytime etc (see aaroniseverything), but i dont do specific heat training i totally avoid heat stresses one.

No joke bro. Of coz the below are for those ang mohs who totally not acclimatised to our heat index here....but it amplifies and shows the rather big effect.
31 deg C 70 RH = 37.8 deg C heat idnex

But for those of us who run very late and early morning, it will still be somewhat affected.
I mean, the converse is true, it's like altitude training. You altitude train and come down to sea level, or you heat train increase plasma vol etc and then go nice weather marathon.

my body is well acclimatized to the heat and humility. normally as the weather gets hotter.. i plan a two week period where I do my easy runs in scotching mid day heat.. thereafter the body gets used to it. my wife say i siao.. use body to experiment. LOL

from my limited 10TT, 3 so far .. the next one is this sunday. the key seems to holding pace and I have been reading up on building up lactate tolerance and getting body used to it. the first TT i started out all guns blazing... and end up suffering the last 2-3 km. so second TT.. started a bit conservative but could not cover up in the 2nd half and still had reserve still. the 3rd TT i balanced out and seems to do well. lets see this sunday.
oh ya.. i do my TT at a stadium... early morning before the masses invade!

Last sunday at running lab run I missed sub 40 by 40s, definitely can relate to starting out too fast. When I hit pb for 5km while doing 10km haha. I think balanced should be good. All the best

Ok, good luck. If lucky is cool rainy weather on Sat so that it extends to Sunday early morning.
