Dan John's 10000 swing challenge Day 20

24kg KB

500 swings 30 Goblet sit ups

Cumulated swings 10000

Personal Reflections

I'm done with the program. Took me longer than expected.

I feel that I know how to activate my glutes and hamstrings better. But i'm not sure whether I got stronger (doubt so).

Program was mainly used as a GPP before starting a proper strength training routine.

Back.

My "peak" period involving work might be almost over. Entered a regional Jujutsu tournament last week in Bangkok. Minor finger/thumb sprains but should be good to go.

Got my bumper plates and whippy oly barbell. Found a basic weightlifting routine to practice my snatch/cleans/their variations.

Pendlay Beginning Olympic routine

Workout 1

Snatch
Empty bar x 10,
5kg x 10

Clean pull
40kg 2 x 5

High clean (knee)
60kg 1 x 5

Push press
60kg 5 x 3

Back squat
80kg 5 x 3

Complexes

Personal Reflections
It's going to take awhile for me to learn. Feels like back to square one. I've been following Ma Strength/Coach Wu/Kirksman on Instagram for some tips. Going to upload some videos of my snatch/c&j soon.

Exciting times.

Workout 2

Snatch pull
40kg 2 x 5

High snatch (knee0
40kg 1 x 5

Cleans (forgot to jerk)
40kg 1 x 10

Front Squats
60kg 3 x 3

High clean (knee)
60kg 1 x 5

Push press
60kg 5 x 3

Complexes

Personal Reflections
Focusing a lot on feeling and reviewing my videos now. Since the lifts are pretty technical i'm going to take it really slow on increasing the weights.

Finding a weight enough to provide a resistance for me to learn the lifts.

Workout 3

Snatch (warm up with my 2m PVC pipe)
20kg x 5, 30kg x 5

Clean pull
60kg x 5

Cleans (supposed to do high cleans)
60kg x 5

Neck Jerk
50kg 2 x 5

Back squat
90kg 5 x 3

Personal Reflections

Realised I have some minor injuries carried over from my jujitsu comp.

Right thumb slightly sprain.
Left elbow muscle/tissues slightly impinged/strained
Left hip/lower back slightly impinged/strained

Anyway training has been interesting lately. I'm still finding out what feels more comfortable for foot position. Noticed it "feels" more comfortable when I start the first pull for my snatch with my weight slightly towards my forefoot.

Some comments, if you don't mind:
1. High pulls look ok, but can't really see your head position as it was cut off in the video. It does seem like your head was overly forward in the first rep. Also, not enough explosion during the triple extension, which is the point of high pulls.
2. It ain't high snatch, but hang snatch you're doing. Again, not enough explosion, bar speed was pretty low, would advise drilling this in with just a barbell. It should be snappy.

First pull for all lifts (including pulls and squats) should be mid-forefoot. It will come as a shock for powerlifters who have been drilled to always be on their heels their entire lives.

Workout 4

Snatch (snatch in various positions )
20kg barbell

Clean and Jerk
40kg x 5, 70kg x 3

Back squat
70kg x 5, 90kg x 5, 110kg x 5

Personal Reflections

I'm going to keep on drilling with an empty barbell/pvc pipe for snatch.

I'm going to use my 10kg bumpers for cleans and clean/jerks.

Learn an important lesson of ensuring the bar drops IN FRONT of me today.

Fatigue faster doing this. I realised I should just stop once my mind can't focus well for safety concerns.

Workout 5

Snatch
with PVC Pipes

Cleans(from knees and from hips)
20kg x 3 x 10

Benchpress
90kg 2 x 5, 4

Front Squats
40kg 3 x 5

Personal Reflections

Still practicing the drills repeatedly. I'd like to increase weights but it doesn't make sense for me to do it now.

Gotta take more videos upload on /r/weightlifting or here and get them check.

Just curious bro, over these years, which are your favorite training methods, modalities, programs or exercises?

That's a good one. I'm still figuring that out. It has to do with my goals. I train mainly for overall fitness, given the finite resources I have. CrossFit comes pretty close to what I envision i'd like to be. However, I think most boxes in SG focuses primarily too much on WODs.

Currently i'm learning the olympic lifts so I can include it in my own personal block periodization for the coming years. (Like first 3 months on strength, next 3 months power).

It requires focus. At this point, at this point in time I rather use my time and energy to learn the olympic lifts.

Personally, my ideal program for overall fitness would be something like

1) Barbell strength training (Mainly squats or deadlifts) twice-thrice a week
2) Bodyweight strength training with rings for upper body
3) Explosive movements (olympic lifts) once a week
4) Conditioning (agility training/sprints/tabata/circuits/sports with friends) once a week
5) Floreio/Ido Portal/Yoga movements/stretching could probably be done everyday
6) some LISS Swimming/Walking

Haha. Confirm have to manage once I start a family hopefully. Probably can stick with 1,5 and 6. Or at least no. 5.

Hip Snatch
20kg

Clean and jerk
40kg

Squats
80kg x 5, 110kg x 5

Triple extension still feels weird for me. I feel i'm not going explosive enough. Sometimes it feels i'm just shifting my hips forward. I remembered reading the cue being jumping straight up.

Focused on engaging the lats and triple extension after viewing this video.
