Second choice maybe just take a domestic flight?
Third option: Take overnight busses. Willer bus and vip liner seem to be two of the most popular options. Cheapest option liao cos you even save the traveling night's hotel costs 🤣

For cheapo who can sleep anywhere & time

Hopping on a highway bus will get you to from Tokyo to Osaka in around 6-10 hours (8 on average, in our experience) and set you back between S$24.59* to S$122.94* one way, depending on what level of comfort you’re after. We’ve done a S$24.59* bus trip. Can’t say we would do it again. Budget at least S$35.65* for a semi-decent ride. There are night and day buses, with the former departing around midnight and rolling into Osaka at the crack of dawn. The buses leave from major stations in Tokyo. There are various operators, but try Kosoku Bus for reasonably priced bus tickets—it’s pretty standard to find a night trip for S$36.88* one way.

Some buses have toilets, some don’t, but they all stop regularly for loo and smoke breaks anyway.

Cost: S$24.59* to S$122.94* one way.
Time: 6-10 hours.

I will be going to and fro and getting a jr pass for 5 peoples is to expensive if I do not make full used for it. Going to Osaka for sightseeing and to USJ and back to Tokyo that it. Second choice maybe just take a domestic flight?

ANA got promotion for their domestic flights. You might wanna compare the price with JR Pass.

Shinkansen: hop in 5 minutes before departure & nearby
To fly : be at airport 1-2 hours before departure + Narita/ Kansai Airport are a distance away ( 1/2 day gone )

Shinkansen - 3 Hour Journey. + 15 early arrival + journey time from wherever you stay.

Airplane- Depend on where you stay, the nearer to Handea Airport, the faster with airport limousine.
Take JAL explorer flight for foreigner which is WAY cheaper (15,120 yen (without tax), $190sgd+(with tax) 2 way) Haneda Airport to Itami Airport. Took before not bad, 2 luggage per person too lol~ and free drink on board and it is less than 1 hour journey unless snow. but then again if snow train and plane cannot fly (I got delayed 1hr in intami due to snow last jan)
Itami Airport is just 30 min from osaka main city either by train or bus :)

Total Time : 30 min lumiouse bus, 2 hour early check in Airport (shopping/have breakfast after that, 30 min early be at gate), 1 hour flight, 15 min luggage pick up , 30 min journey to osaka city. Total - 4hr 15min

The JR pass is quite expensive $341 at klook, and many private train lines won't accept it, only JR will. Use the savings for the train ride and limousine bus..It is much more worth, free drinks and time at the airport to chill :)

Shinkansen takes u right into the city. u can easily find accom that are near the shinkansen station like Tokyo or shinagawa. So the total travel time needed is just that 3hr shinkansen ride + maybe 15min buffer to reach station earlier.
But of course shinkansen more expensive lah. So it is a trade off between cost and convenience

Tokyo mostly Jr. Osaka not really. So if you are going to and fro on shinkansen. Then it's worth it. If not its ****.

I lost my JR pass in Japan and had to pay over $100 per trip one way. Definitely worth it to buy a pass if you intend to use their bullet train service even just a few times.

Worth it or not depending on how far & how frequent you ride Shinkansen.
Some already ‘feel worth it’ to & return Osaka / Tokyo :o

I heard that you can buy JRP ( slightly more expensive) in Japan too.
So if you lose it but still have many Shinkansen trips, buy another one. :o

Worth it to get JR pass if i am spending 5 full days in Osaka/Kyoto then travel to Tokyo on a shinkansen? I am definitely taking the shinkansen because i am bringing my wife and child. Its more for the experience and convenience.
Or should i just buy the shinkansen passes from the station in Osaka and use suica card to move around Osaka and Kyoto?
Also, can i use the same pass to hop on a shinkansen from Tokyo to Yokohama?
