Is there anyone who have taken up Kaplan's part-time degree course - Bachelor of Science in Computer Science?

Was wondering if it is hard, especially for someone who does not have any programming background? Also would like to know any feedback/ care to share any experiences on the programme etc..

i took the part time diploma of their computing course :s22: well , for those with no background.. it can be a little of a struggle... i did see many people struggle... and many people who can do well too.
It's really up to you ... reading and understanding on your own part is important.

Hey fplolz, thanks for the reply. Well thought I had like to have some testimonials, rather than the ones that was featured on the site (was a bit skeptical about it...)

I do know that it may not be a smooth sailing journey, but at the very least would want to have something that I can somewhat gauge it etc

By the way, I am in similar boat and was planning to have a QnA session with them before I made any decisions.

Can anyone kindly advise me what core questions I should be asking them?

Go nus or ntu la

anyway, a few years back I did went to ntu for engineering related course as a direct entry student.

However, as I am unable to cope with the curriculum and schedule, long story shot, I dropped out within a year and you can say I have develop a "fear".

And now, as I am in mid-20s, I had wanna get a degree in the shortest possible time

it really doesn't matter information system or computer science.. it overlaps to a certain degree.. but i would say information system is more specialized towards a certain aspect.. computer science.. is like the whole kitchen sink.. a little of everything..

Personally , i signed up for UOL sim Computing and Information Systems ... which honestly sounds like a mix between those two... i didn't choose kaplan in the end.. because there were too many teething problems..

slow management..
close to no updates from management..
no campus of it's own.. shared with pomo and wiki edge building mainly..

I would personally recommend MDIS or SIM part time... but do note, it's not gonna be any easier than the NTU degree..

Then again , you would have to consider where you work and where you stay.. Imagine you are working in eunos and stay in sengkang.. it wouldn't be feasible to head down to SIM for part time lessons... Kaplan would be decent.. town area.. or maybe PSB at tanjong pagar..

TS , your boss also must be accommodating... if your job is the kind that requires you to OT frequently... it will be hard to do part-tiime.. You would be better off signing up for UOL distance learning degree... which is the same as the one you get from SIM.........sian 1/2. lol /rant

Hey fplolz, thanks for the information. Not that I am expecting the Kaplan's degree to be any easier but I am merely weighing the pros and cons between schools, for example, smu and kaplan since both are within the same location etc.. And seeing that I am in my mid-20s, I am trying not to waste any time as I did back when I was in NTU (which I am so regretting)

However I do appreciate that you have pointed out a very important fact especially when I am currently working and some other aspects that I do need to take note of. As for UOL distance learning, while it seems nice, but I think all in all, I feel that I am not able to make it as I feared that I am not that self-disciplined as I used to be, since it is going to be online etc

Great to hear from you :D i will typing what i know.. so if you do see the parts that you have already known, just ignore it.

Definitely , do weigh the pros and cons. Murdoch's degree , to be honest, isn't exactly that outstanding .. but it's better than , as of now , UniSIM's degree. Despite the government pushing it forward, it still has a relatively low profile and international recognition leaves much to be desired. ..

Another thing to consider is whether the degree you are interested in has Honours with it.. Unless you are studying a U.S degree , Aus and UK's degrees usually have separate year for honours. This is just to cover the future probability of you studying further... Murdoch's degree in kaplan doesn't have honours.. ( you have do go to australia for a year for the honours)

Yes , your working conditions are important too.. when i studied part time at kaplan , i did see many people struggling just to be punctual and , at times , even turning up for the lesson.

Thanks again for another piece of information (the honors part) in which I am not aware of :)
I think my working conditions are the most important criteria for my studies as my work ends at 7!

By the way, can I ask for opinions about this school if you don't mind? Had wanted to have more opinions

Bro, I also drop out from NTU and feeling regretful. If you can make it to local uni, don't waste the chance. Don't have to rush to get a degree. Must really think of it whether it will affect you later. I'm not saying private uni is not good, it's just that sometime you need to think of the money and opportunities too. For me I want to gain more knowledge out of a course therefore I have chosen to enrol into local uni again and give my best. Doesn't matter if you cannot score well. Just try your best. Nothing comes easy without hardwork.

Hey fplolz, not about murdoch, but I actually embedded another school link in the word - "school" (Here you go: http://www.sit.edu.sg/)

My working hours sucks, I know.. Of course this is something that I will need to discuss with my boss if I am intent on going for part time studies

Hey man, I totally understand what you meant. Back when I was in ntu, it is a bit absurd that despite me being a direct entry student, my second year was almost filled with first year modules and the schedule in itself is 830-630 with an hour of lunch break in-between. Not to mention that the travelling back and forth from school to home is insane too (my school day is like 630am-10pm daily)

While I know that enrolling in local uni is good, but probably it is the fear of me having to go through again such insanity and I think doing part-time may be even worse :O and hence I do not want to waste time and money on this... Hope you understand man..

But just for curious sake, did you go back to study again after you drop out?

Yes I will be applying again next year.

if you can manage part time study with full time work. Go ahead. Again, you need to be discipline and manage your time well.

Anyway, try not to rush. Think of the modules you are taking.

Since the admission period for local uni is closed. Why not take this time to work and revise the topics you are weak in?

ahh the website.. wa you embed like that :D how to see
Code:
http://www.sit.edu.sg/courses/part-time-bachelor-degree-course/top-up-degree/

well.. it's registered under CPE .. so.. that much we can trust it..
Also , the degree is a top-up part-time degree... you would have to enquire with them if you qualify for direct entry..

1.5 years part time.. top-up degree with honours .. sounds decent .

For part time degrees, I think it doesn't matter which campus you choose. It's more of how recognized is the Uni for the course you are taking. Especially for part time, your intention is just to go there for night classes and go home after that. You won't have time to go to their library or use the facilities.

For people with full time job, it is best to choose a campus near to your office so that it will not be a rush. Most of the time will be self-study as you will only take in max. 10% what the lecture is about as you are probably too tired.

Very frankly, getting the degree is just a piece of paper to find better jobs with higher pay at the beginning. After 3-5 years of working experience, the degree don't matter that much as compared to your work experience.

Hey there, I agreed to some of the pointers but then again, in Singapore as there are so many private institutions, it is hard at times to know which institution to go to, and whether or not the degree is 'valid/prestige' (I think this is more important especially for people applying govt jobs?) etc
