Amazon is really fast with 2-day local delivery. However for international markets, there are lots of variables involved so things may be slow. My experience has been very good with sg shipping, around 10-14 days turnaround...

Well maybe I am spoilt by iherb. The delivery by DHL is cheap and the parcels usually take no more than 5 days to reach me including weekends.

I'm not in a hurry, Amazon can take its time. :)

DHL is really really good and a merchant who uses DHL at a cheap price is simply a wonderful thing. I've seen DHL prices from the very cheap (CGW and Borderlinx) to the very expensive (other forwarders)... don't know why that happens...

Hi jeffyen, I need a bit of advice.

At Amazon, my package is now marked as 'shipping' (hooray!). A thought suddenly occurred to me... do I need to inform comgateway that a parcel is coming their way, before the actual delivery? Right now all I have done is I have used the US address given to me as the mailing address. I have not sent any info to comgateway as I don't seem to find any instruction asking me to do so.

I remember years ago when I used vpost I was asked to email them the invoice or some such before the delivery to the us address.

Sorry for this totally newbie question.

No, you don't need to inform CGW, but if you want to, you can. There's a space under the 'packages at US address' to fill in the tracking no. that Amazon provides. This will ensure 'faster matching' I guess.

Vpost doesn't need that sort of 'notification' nowadays too.

I finally requested comgateway to send the parcel to me!

However, I had also to declare the total value of the items @ comgateway, which came up to be over $400 (1 kindle dx, 1 paperwhite, and also original covers).

I understand that if the value is over $400, it attracts the payment of GST, which I may have to pay to the customs when the delivery arrives in Singapore.

Are there ways to avoid this tax in future? How do importers of kindles buy in bulk and also avoid GST? From my calculation, buying just 2 kindles with covers will already exceed $400.

Another thing, when I declare the value at comgateway, should it be in US dollar or Sing dollar? Comgateway doesn't specify... I just entered the amount in USD.

Will appreciate any help..

The correct way is to make 2 purchases at amazon. The dx and the paperwhite separately. Then at cgw, ship 1 package and pay. And ship the other and pay. No gst :)

The reporting is in usd. For importers bulk means 2. At least for me lol

Guess I have to pay (GST) for my lesson. :)

There will be more delays at the customs, I guess. Don't know how things will turn up, and how much time I have to wait to receive a letter from them asking me to send them the invoice, so that they can calculate the GST. Knowing the speed at which they process stuff.. URGH..... I'd be lucky to get my kindles before Christmas.

I swear this is the last time I buy anything more than $400 from overseas!

That is if the amount is less than $400. I've declared the amount to be over $400. I suspect it will be detained at customs to ensure that I pay up GST before they'll release it to me.

This is what I read from the site:

Internet Purchases/Postal Parcels

Clearing parcels containing non-dutiable and non-controlled goods of above $400 in value

Parcels containing non-dutiable and non-controlled goods above $400 in value are subject to payment of GST. ICA requires the invoices or confirmation slips (with values of goods stated), printed from the website of the Internet Portal upon confirmation of transactions, to compute the GST payable on the parcels.

If the parcel is imported with an invoice attached, SP will deliver the parcel to the addressee and collect the GST upon delivery.

If the parcel is imported without any invoice attached to it at the time of arrival, the addressee upon notification by SP could fax the supplier’s invoice or confirmation slip from the Internet Portal (with values of goods stated) to ICA at SPC for computation of GST. The addressee may call SPC to collect the parcels or appoint SP to act on his/her behalf for delivery of the parcel and payment of GST. A service fee is payable to SP for the service rendered.

What a mess. :D

Don't worry gst is a routine thing and you have already paid (in case you are not aware). It will just zoom past customs and you don't have to do anything else. I have done nearly fifty such shipments without a hitch. Dhl is a solid forwarder and they have their processes nailed. They even deliver on Sundays regularly!

Customs will first make use of Comgateway's declaration of the value, which you provided, Only if they need further proof, then amazon original invoice is required. Unless you grossly under declare (which you did not), the parcel will be pass through custom without much delays. If overdeclared, they will accept the declared value as well.

Custom is not going to process hours of paperworks just to claim additional 7% above the USD400 you already declared, and willing to pay.Or vice versa, re-imburse you for overdeclaring.

Correct me if I'm wrong, when they compute the GST, they don't just take the amount in excess of $400. They take the whole amount. Eg, if it is $401, they will charge $401x7%, and not $1x%7.

In my comgateway bill, they appear to charge the full value @7% under Taxes & Duties. :)

Yes correct, they take the (whole product price plus DHL shipping) * .07 = GST

CGW asks you to pay DHL plus gst.

My DX is finally here!!! I've yet to unbox it. Will do it over the weekend.

Thanks, jeffyen. If it weren't for your blog, I'd never have thought it was possible for me to get it.
