TGS is not a scholarship.

Any eligible candidate can actually apply for it though it is subjected to approval.

Basically, instead of paying the full costs of education, TGS allows the foreign students to pay at similar costs to a local subject to a 3 year working bond in SG.

Scholarship will be on top of TGS.

You are right that it is not a scholarship, but wish to correct you that the international students still pay a lot higher than the locals after the subsidy. They do not pay the same amount as locals.

tbh, part of the rankings of a uni is the international student count too
without it, nus ranking would plummet
so cant have both ways

how can no singaporeans have been displaced .... when you have 1,600 foreigners on scholarship.

Those scholarships could have gone to 1,600 singaporeans.

Actually universities offering scholarship for foreign students are standard.

Even PJ thum was a recipient of foreign scholarship.

I think its fair for singapore university to offer scholarships to Asean students since we benefited from their countries also..

There are so many local young junior researchers as well as experienced senior lab techs and staff who are working at the universities and you don't offer TGS to them? You offer TGS to 1600 foreigners only? Can I see some TGS offered to local university staff who have worked many years there? I thought you want the sg core?

It's time to replan for the sg education of the future. I can tell you out of these 1600 foreigners, 1000 will run off to other countries later. Change the way the graduate courses are conducted because in the future going for higher education will be part and parcel of our life. Technology is fast changing. You have to allow people to study at their own speed after work. From what I see sinkies are not that welcomed for the TGS. Seems like this type of supermarket discounts are not for us. :s13:

current plan is to restrict 60% of Singaporean cohort from getting degrees.

Economy does not need 60% of Singaporeans to enter Uni.

Import FT more!!!

Pap is mostly working to find excuses to cover up their terrible policy making over the many years. Not much time left to do proper work for their 10k salary. That’s why some resort to crying to escape.

Hear hear, not only do we give scholarships to foreigners, beyond that we are also reserving another 10% of our university places for more foreigners and letting them enjoy the same tuition grant similar to what Singaporeans get.

Song bo 61%?

You surf the internet to cite an article in 2015 and not even based on Singapore demographics or our economy policies. :s22:

Nah .. I share one about korea for you .. at least asian context
https://wenr.wes.org/2018/10/education-in-south-korea

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), 70 percent of 24- to 35-year-olds in the nation of 51.5 million people have completed some form of tertiary education.

This extreme competitiveness has created a number of social problems: Suicide, for instance, is the leading cause of death among teens in Korea, which has the highest suicide rate overall in the entire OECD. Student surveys have shown that poor grades and fears of failure are major reasons for suicidal thoughts, while Korea simultaneously has a growing teenage drinking problem.

Despite all the time, finances, and emotional resources invested in their education, Korean youth find it increasingly difficult to secure desired quality, socially prestigious jobs. The country’s obsession with higher education continues to sustain a “college education inflation,” flooding the Korean labor market with a supply of university graduates that hold degrees of deflated value whose earnings prospects are decreasing.
