the "Pasar Malam" isn't really a night market... its more of an evening market...
most of the shops start opening at 4 to 5pm... by 6pm everything is in full swing... i when there at about 8pm... alot of the good stuff were sold out.
quite a wide variety of stuff was being sold, mainly clothes, fruits and food, but also other stuff like toys and even live fish and other pets like turtles and hamsters.
anyway will attach some pictures i took.
Putting the
market into night market, there are stalls selling vegetables, fruits and even fresh and frozen yong tau foo items
this store sells traditional teochew keuh. also note that cars can still drive on some roads so becareful when u are shopping.
Sold pau, siew mai and loi mai kai, i enjoyed the loi mai kai alot, maybe i lucky got the chicken breast meat, gf got the wing. siew mai not bad, pau the skin quite thick, i tried the lotus flavor, not bad, ate the inside, threw the skin away
also note the "friendly" branded shoes in the background.
IMO...
what you should try/buy:
BBQ sausages (they sell out fast)
fried peanut and ikan bilis (one stall selling them freshly fried)
Mango sticky rice (sold by this man with his thai wife)
Things to avoid:
Bua long long (i bought 3 bottles, they were pretty unripe, had a very "raw" taste, the next day it tasted sour and i threw it away.)
Otak (the guy talks a big game, but its very thin and wasn't anything special)
Fishball (over priced, RM4 for 4 balls on a stick. nothing special)
Fried chicken (its decent, but it lacks flavor. a lot of stalls selling it, it looks nice big and crispy, but i found it rather bland)
think the best advise is to go early. food is fresher, was interested in trying stuff like chendol, but thinking about it, they start at 4pm, everyone was likely out of the fridge since 2/3pm. they did use ice but there isn't any proper refrigeration.
