Hi all, I am looking for a decent laptop around 1-1.5k range for school. Now that black friday is coming any place I can look for? Looking at productivity, battery life etc. No need for gaming.

Ok thanks. Looks like I shall wait for black friday deal. I like to get a good one at carousell but doubt the battery is still good.

As someone who has been through the process of bringing laptop to uni over 4 years. I'd say that it's very tempting to get the laptop with the best specs. However these tend to be gaming ones which are really heavy. Personally if there's no need for gaming, you can just get an ultrabook like Swift 5, Zenbook, XPS13, HP Envy.

If value reliability and warranty, get a Latitude instead of the XPS from Dell. Dell outlet selling Latitude 7490 at $1379 compared to $2k+ list price.

i5 8350U
16GB RAM
256GB NVME SSD
1080p matte touchscreen
3 yrs ProSupport

No need to buy dongles, will always work with school projectors thanks to native HDMI port.

Sounds good, how is the battery life?

The Latitude 7480/7490 comes with either the 42WHr or 60WHr battery. Obviously the bigger the capacity, the longer the life and heavier the laptop. For the 7480/7490 model, 42WHr battery = 1.35kg while 60WHr = 1.5kg.

I have the latter in my 7480. Mileage really depends on your workload. If mostly Word/Excel/PDF stuff, 7 to 8 hours or more. If mostly heavy web browsing (i.e. 40++ tabs open), 3 to 6 hours.

Generally, a conservative estimate for battery life regardless of brand is to use the WHr capacity and assume a minimum 10WHr is used to last 1 hour.

Also account for eventual battery wear over the years. For flagship business laptops like Dell Latitude 5000/7000 series and Lenovo Thinkpad T/X series, original replacement batteries are easy to find. I replaced mine after 2.5 years for $80-ish.

If referring to poly/uni, best to get from sch itself as it comes with 3yrs on-site warranty that cover labour and parts.

what u pay is what you get

just work within your budget of 1.5k

remember you need the laptop for 3-4 years of your university work.

reliability is key unless you dont mind the trouble of changing laptop
