Ok got it! Anyone did ICL and needed an injection insTead of topical eyedrop anaesthesia? It was rather discomforting/ bit painful for me during measurement so they said I probably need injection

I just went down today to do the $5 screening + Dr consultation for Lasik eligibility, which amounted to $80 for the total cost. The $5 test alone would not be accurate enough, since the dilation of the eyes is done before the Dr consultation - so yes it seems like its mandatory before the doctor will even want to perform any surgery on your eye. Hope it helps.

The $5 screening is only done by the optometrist and results shown to doctor. Really it is to filter out those unsuitable for LASIK / PRK as corneal too thin or too weak or degree + astigmatism > 1000. It then saves the patient money so no need to do full assessment ( which is 100% mandatory for treatment) - which some other clinics charge $200-$300, only to be disappoint that cannot have LASIk.

I just went for the screening and was advised to do wavefront lasik with cross linking preferably. Was informed that my cornea might be borderline meeting the minimum thickness requirement after surgery hence cross linking is recommended.
Hence, would like to seek a second doctor's advice on Relex smile option before deciding which surgery to go for.

Just did my transprk with corneal cross linking last evening. First few hours were uncomfortable but it got a lot better after that. On the way for my appointment now. Better than I expected tbh. (my prescription is about -600 with 200 astigmatism)

I read that Dr Ho at Clear Vision advocates Transprk method as there is no cut or incision made even though the recovery period is longer than normal lasik and relex smile. May I also ask why did the doc recommended you to do cross linking? Thanks!

No worries. Thanks for your well wishes! From what I remembered the orthopedist or Doctor didn't mentioned anything to me about cross-linking. So am assuming all good to go. But I was told there will be a pre-test for glaucoma on the day of the surgery.

On your question about the wave-front lasik, I was recommended by the orthopedist to go for it, so didn't really consider other option like the relex smile which you had mentioned. Btw based on my understanding there is also the "standard" lasik which is ard $200 cheaper per eye - but personally I opted for wave-front since it will a higher chance of better accuracy in terms of results. Not sure if relex smile is an option as my prescription is quite high esp with higher astig. Astig requires more cornea to be reshaped compared to myopia. As for cross linking, it's for long term structural integrity of the cornea and it was compulsory in my case. Had a friend who did transprk without it but his prescription was about 500 with minimal astig.

LASIK ( Wavefront-guided ) is much better for accurately treating high degrees and high Astigmatism .

NEW ORLEANS 2021 -- Among patients who underwent LASIK surgery on one eye and SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) surgery on the other, the LASIK eyes retained better vision on average, according to long-term results of a prospective study.

Among 21 patients, 92.4% of the LASIK eyes had an uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) of 20/20 or better compared with 79.2% of the SMILE eyes after 4 years (P<0.002), reported A. John Kanellopoulos, MD, of LaserVision Clinical and Research Eye Institute in Athens, Greece, during a presentation here at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) annual meeting.

Additionally, 62.3% of LASIK eyes had a UDVA of 20/16 or better versus 34.5% of SMILE eyes (P<0.002), he noted.

Two SMILE eyes required photorefractive keratectomy retreatment, which Kanellopoulos described as a high number.

"Both [techniques] were safe and effective in correcting myopia and myopic astigmatism. All patients had a very rapid recovery," Kanellopoulos told MedPage Today.

However, research has suggested that there are differences to consider, he added. SMILE is very effective to improve vision in patients with myopia of -3.00 to -6.00 without astigmatism. "But if there's significant astigmatism, and/or myopia is of a higher refractive error, LASIK is far superior," he noted.

Less tissue is removed with TransPRK for sure. My cornea is about 440 microns after my surgery (started with 580). Its been more than 3 months and its one of the best decisions i've made in my life that's for sure especially for my active lifestyle.
