For anyone interested to live in S.korea (From Yahoo)

***********************************************
Immigration to Korea is probably harder than immigration to any other OECD country. Korea does not give permanent residency unless you are extremely rich or married to a Korean.

If you are really dedicated, you can live in Korea for several decades scrimping and saving at one-year contract jobs, until you have saved 500,000,000 won, then you can open a business with that money using a D-8 visa and eventually get permanent residency that way. You can come in with 5,000,000,000 won and get instant permanent residency.

You can also marry a Korean, and this is the route that the vast majority of immigrants take.

Besides permanent residency, it's possible to apply for citizenship if you have lived in Korea for at least five years, but this is almost never granted, and you can look forward to naturalization tests in Korean, an assessment of your Korean language level, immigration officers checking to see if you've made a contribution to Korean society, etc. AND THEN you might get drafted into the military to serve your two years. However, it is highly unlikely that, even after passing all the tests, they'd choose to give you Korean citizenship, unless you were a professor or doctor or something like that.

In short, immigration to Korea is much harder than immigration to Singapore, Hong Kong, or even Japan, and while I have never met a Korean PR holder, I have met MANY permanent residents in Hong Kong, Japan, and I also know Singaporean permanent residents. I personally recommend that if immigration is your goal, you check out another OECD Asian country instead -- Korea is NOT immigration friendly.

Oh...보세요 comes from the verb 보다. In plain translation it means please look/see.

However in "해 보세요." which is a grammar form, it means to attempt doing something and see the result.

A bit difficult to relate to english but it is similar to chinese
"試看看"

For example 말해 보세요 . Try telling (me) 試说看看
찾아 보세요. Try searching (something) 試找看看
먹어 봐 Try eating (this) 試吃看看

아/어/해 보다 is a very common grammar

다음 학기? 지금 어디에서 공부하고 있습니까?:s13:

So I guess it kind of means "try <something>".
알겠습니다. 감사합니다.

지금은 NUS에서 한국어를 공부합니다.

I started from level 1, just finished level 2. Will be learning informal speech in level 3.
The course isnt too difficult. 선생님들 다 괜찮아요.

From A rat tail book
창현: 안녕하세요 여기 나이트 자주 오세요? 몇년생이세요?
아름: 가끔 와요. 저 83년생이요.
창현: 83년생? 돼지띠? 나도 돼지띠인데. 우리 갑니다. 좋다! 반말하자.

재미있죠?

Haha... I am referring to korean modules at the NUS Clementi campus. They are free to take for NUS students. The park mall centre is the NUS extension. Anybody can take the modules but needs to pay for it.

Haha... Some misunderstanding to clarify.

But generally nus korean modules are more difficult and challenging than NUS extension classes as they are more academic based. They have more teaching hours (6 hrs per week for 10 weeks) per semster and students have to take quizzes, exams, projects and oral presentation (my friend told me) .:s13:

네. 쓰기랑 말하기 시험 다 있어요.
Not sure about projects though. I heard that we will be doing oral presentations with korean students from level 3 and above =\

Any korean dictionaries/books to recommend?
I saw this "500 basic korean verbs" book in stores but am not sure if it would be useful.

Google translate is not the most accurate friend when you are learning a language =\

Oh for dictionary, i stick to naver online dict. The database is huge and it is easy to search. I dislike print dictionary because it is difficult to use. Must remember the order of the vowels and consonants. Explanation and examples are also limited. Naver dict is my best friend. I see classmates buying print dictionary but seldom use. :(
