Thank you for your advice. Usually I don't buy from tax free shops because of this problem. I wish I were in Tokyo though. The local large stores here tend to have a point rebate system so it doesn't work out for temporary lodgers like me. I'll see if I can find some smaller shops today if I have the time.

At least this is the case at Akiba. "Tax free" shops price their products higher.

I compared the book to Dimitri_can's recommended grammar book for JLPT4 to 1 but the English explanations in this one are much more detailed. It compares and contrasts different example sentences and tells you when and why each grammar form should/should not be used.

I'm really tempted to buy the book myself since I'm in still Japan and my school can help me to get a marginal discount but it's just so expensive :( Maybe I should treat it as a Christmas present for myself.... どうしよう？？！

Terraj, i find the period literature rather awkward reading in english while haruki murakamis easily adapts to any context. probably one would get a different feel reading it in jap. Books are so cheap in japan.. anywhere i could find such 2nd hand bkstores with jap fiction in sg?

there's a 2nd hand bookstore/cafe near robertson quay named ボングウ, or something like that. i can't remember exactly how to write it. you can get a meal and read their books there, and i think you can buy the book. its very cheap, just a few dollars for one book. i don't know about the variety of the book, but there's quite a lot in there. you can go take a look. and you can also sell your used japanese books/magazine there too. but i believe you can only get $1~$2 dollars.

and the curry rice there is good :D

The basic and intermediate books are comprehensive,giving example sentences and differences between similar grammar points.
It is good for people who wants to study Japanese through English.However,i find it alone unsuitable for JLPT studies as it is not structured to the syllables.The vocab used in the example sentences are also of higher level at times
It is better as a reference book for grammar points here and there.

If I get it I plan on using it as a reference for reading books since it's arranged according to syllables. As for JLPT, somehow JLPT 1 isn't enticing at all. I think I need to work on my conversation skills before I try to tackle anything heavier else it'll be embarrassing to have a higher grammar level without the ability to speak decently. :(

They have it once every three months for their members...the 20% discount thingy...
So long as you are buying $100 and abv worth of books from them its worth it to get the card during that 20% discount time...

oh... coz me not sure for me will spead these much... but then... each book i bought cost $50+ at least lol... now still thinkin to get membership or not to ...but 20% discount is a lot... :(
