1)From my observation,
他動詞 will end with either su or ru.
When it ends with ru,it will occur as a group 1 verb
When 他動詞 is grp 1, 自動詞 is never grp 1
When 他動詞 ends with su, 自動詞 may or may not be grp 1

So far,this seems to be always the case.But,i maybe wrong.

2)U-verbs or 五段活用?

sorry i think i didn't make it clear and gave the wrong impression

i did japanese donkey years ago at sec sch+jc. since then i've never studied the language. just watched anime and play games and i naturally learnt it. i signed up for jlpt but had no time to study so i just crashed course the syllabus in one week before the test.

what i think is that yar, u dont need to attend courses or what. just must expose yourself and u'll naturally learn. i find language learning is easy so long as u soak urself in that environment (watching anime is sth i'd do without anyone to push me. lol)

Meaning you did it for O lvs and A lvs right?
Then that clarify the doubt and possibility.
If from nothing and just rely on anime and games ,you must have did tonnes of self-study over the years.

If he took GCE A lvs in Japanese then is not crash course.
A levels Japanese is no simpler than JLPT 1,perhaps i should say harder since they have oral and written components.

Must wait for him to shed more light on this.lolz.

You cant really equate cause the test format is different.
But if really want to gauge ,i heard its level 3.

Maybe someone who took it before can clarify.

I will strike down my own observation for 1)
I realized that there is at least one exception to the trend.
E.G.
焼く(他動詞) VS 焼ける(自動詞)

Anyone have any good materials/books to recommend for 2kyuu level self-study ?

Seriously ,please dont recommend Shin Nihongo no Chuukyuu and Chuukyuu kara manabu nihongo.
I have gave much thoughts about these two books and looked through them here and there.
They are good for classroom environment with a teacher but strictly bad for self-study i think.
Even with the teacher guide/translation/grammar explanation etc.
They just aren't the kind of materials i really want to use for self-study.
I am wondering should i even continue with the second book of Shin Nihongo no Chuukyuu now.

I am more interested on materials focusing on text reading,conversation expressions,Japanese culture and the likes.Bearing in mind i am heading for 2kyuu by the end of this year.I don't mind if the material lapse abit into 1kyuu.
Chinese,English or Japanese medium books are all fine with me.

I don't need materials on vocabulary and grammar,prep course will deal with that.

Actually IMHO you don't really need to follow any particular coursebook any more. When I was supposedly self-studying for 2kyuu/1kyuu, my 'materials' were stuff like my slamdunk manga (heehee) and some other random books (plus of course some grammar books geared towards JLPT, but you have Ikoma prep for that). Just pick whatever interests you, read those with a dictionary in hand, and you should do fine..

Actually IMHO you don't really need to follow any particular coursebook any more. When I was supposedly self-studying for 2kyuu/1kyuu, my 'materials' were stuff like my slamdunk manga (heehee) and some other random books (plus of course some grammar books geared towards JLPT, but you have Ikoma prep for that). Just pick whatever interests you, read those with a dictionary in hand, and you should do fine..

I find reading jp manga and keep looking for the words i don't know abit troublesome.lolz

that's why i only read manga i can understand from only pictures alone (ie. sports/action manga and not things like detective kindaichi), and i managed to ignore the phrase ”赤坊主" for like 10 times before I finally went to ask my friend what it meant.. but then i must say that I have read slamdunk about 10 years earlier in chinese, so i can still grasp the story..

do u remember how u used to read to improve ur english/chinese when u were young? read in context, skip all the words u don't know, check dictionary for only those that're critical in understanding the story (unless ur teacher insisted that u keep a logbook for new vocab), if u see a word often enough, u'll eventually pick it up.. at least that's how i read, whether it's japanese, english or chinese..

and now i'm learning from my ds lite
