For bunka, the pace is fast._. like really. i have the textbook and i don't understand a single thing. The thing about me is that I must jump level, cause' it's sort of wasted if i start all over again, in terms of cost and my time. I was previously in Ikoma, in Basic 1. However, now, i found its cost very pricey and it is slow(although some people said that it only happened in Basic). Beyond seems like an interesting school, with its interesting methods, moreover the costs are cheap. However, it is new and i've so far only heard a review. About aoba, it seems like a better school as i have seen various reviews. I didn't really like Ikoma cause' they don't teach kanji in intermediate and somehow, their lessons seem to not really prepare you for JLPT. Basically, i am only a secondary school student so i sort of have a lot of time(to move on faster) and less money. Lol. Oh and for hougang, i live really really near it but from what i see in reviews, most of the good senseis left and well, i don't really like it. :/

I'm just curious as to why you *must* jump levels? Isn't it better to go through the levels systematically? I'm actually a little confused because on one hand you say that you can go fast and skip levels because you have the time but on the other you say you don't want to go to Bunka cos it is too fast.... I guess it's just the Bunka syllabus. It's quite intimidating to the beginner.

if you have self studied and you feel that you are of a certain standard already than I guess the school's placement test will sort that out for you....

Don't rule out bunka simply because of its textbooks. If you want to learn fast and at a cheaper cost, bunka is a good option. The E1, E2 textbooks are horrible really. Even after finishing the course, I still find the textbooks very messy and super brief. But with the sensei's guidance and their notes handed out during lessons, you will do alright. I find the pace manageable at bunka. But you need to have the initiative to study after class and finish up the homework. Maybe go down talk to the school and find out more?

Thanks guys, i have decided to stop looking for my choices and confusing myself. I have decided on bunka, since my friend agreed to crash course me and lend me the notes. Anyone been to the elementary 1 or any otehr placement test in Bunka? How is it like?

I would say, if you have never attended lessons for Japanese, start at Elementary 1. I think it's more advantageous for you to build up the 'Bunka Foundation' so that when you progress to the higher levels you don't suddenly find a culture shock or missing information.

Bunka will introduce the 6 forms of verbs very early on. As early as lesson 2. They will then teach you a list of verbs over the 8 lessons of Elementary 1 as well as some simple sentence structures to go with them.

Hope you get a great sensei that you can learn well under!

Crash course ? The original Ele1 which was available last year when I joined the school was a 8 week 3 hours a lesson course. The one I attended however, was even more siong, 6 week day course, twice a week, 2 hours each time. Even some who finished the [ current ] amended 10 week Ele1 still say it's fast [ but don't know if these people really put in effort or not ].

Details of placement test to proceed to Ele2 and how to sign up at Bunka here:

Great if you score well, but I say good luck in your Ele2 if you managed to get a borderline pass for the placement test.

Wanting to spend less money is all well and good, but if you really want to skip level, might as well skip 2, 3 levels, otherwise the savings is not a lot for you to justify taking a risk just to struggle at the next level.

The placement test requires you to answer in HIRAGANA, you can write romanji to assist you in understanding, but the sensei will not mark the parts written in romanji [ even if they are correct ]. If you are not able to write hiragana, well, I can only encourage you to go ahead and let you see for yourself what reality is like.

Anyway, just take the test and update us your results..

P.S. There may be DAILY Ele1 and Ele2 classes available only during the school holidays, that allow you to finish within 2 weeks. Usually it's not listed on the website, so you have to walk-in or call them to find out.

Here's a few schools you cna consider:
-JCS @ Bugis.
-Bunka @ Delfi Orchard
-Ikoma @ Shaw
Those 3 are more well-known.
There's other few like Hougang outlet (not sure of the name).
You could check the earlier posts.
