Hey, can i ask something? How much is it to take JLPT 4 or JLPT 3? Is it possible to take both in the same year (Both in December and if the exam timings doesn't clashes?)

Managed to get some recommendation on some electronic dictionaries.
- Ectaco EJ200D
- Sharp PW-E550 Dictionary
- SHARP PW-M100
- Casio Ex-Word XD-470

Wonder if any1 have used the above dictionaries b4? If yes, can someone feedback? Thank you!!!!! ^_^

Got my JLPT results already.A bit disappointed with my results,but overall satisfied.

Writing-Vocab - 93/100
Listening - 76/100
Reading-Grammar - 173/200

Total - 342/400 (Should've gotten higher,but...oh well.XD)

Yep. I'm using it (it's Kanji Sonomama Rakuhiki Jiten by the way). It's pretty good and offers something which other eDictionaries don't. Ability to write out the kanji which you can't pronounce. And the software looks at the overall strokes rather than the progression of strokes; i.e. Japanese kanji has steps to writing it, this stroke first, then this stroke. And the progression isn't always the same as Chinese.

I had the 1st Rakuhiki Jiten and it definitely pales in comparison to Kanji Sonomama.

I'm pretty sure it's Rakubiki Jiten,due to the euphonic change of the 'h' to 'b' in hiki.

And yeah,I've heard the second one is much more better too.Well,I'm gonna buy it next week and see it for myself then huh?XD

I use a Canon wordtank. Allows input of kanji via a stylus as well. Has english<->chinese<->japanese

My bad, I thought I heard it as 'hiki' when I saw the ads.

They have quite a few software to help you with Kanji, like

I had seen more when I was in Japan but I can't seem to find them off Amazon. But the Japanese Brain Age is pretty good too, though some mini-games might be advanced, like the 4-word phrases (what Chinese would call, 成语 ).

This is such a long thread.. Wow!

JCS registration has ended. Ikoma is good but ex. Inoue is unstable. So left with Bunka and Pyaess? I looked at their websites but still cannot decide...

The comments here suggests the pace of Bunka may not be good for slow learners (and those without basics, like me.). What about Pyaess?

Is it really advisable to skip JLPT4 and move to 3 directly?

Whether to skip and move to JLPT 3 direct would depend on your objective of learnin this language.
Is is for job opportunity? Or interest?
I am a more down to earth person and belived that the foundation of learning language is the most important.
Along the way, when you study from elementary, you will gradually pick up new vocab, grammar which i think is more fun compared to pressuring yourselves to memorise them in a short period of time.

But if you are a student or have a lot of time then can consider to skip 4 bah.

Anyway having JLPT 4,3,2,1 is just a basic guide.

As for School , JCS is still the best. I am with JCS now. Although the class size is very big =)

Last time, I was with Inoue. Not bad actually with more personal and family touch.
The teacher will chit chat with you in japanese thus drilling your conversational skill.
I had a great time there , the place that inspired me to continue to study the language =)

agree jcs quite good..very clear with explanation and doesnt rush... was frm bunka inter previously, now at jcs inter ... as for not teaching kanji.. its totally untrue.. the textbook they gave has got furigana above the kanji in each lesson kanji section.. i nv buy the textbook thou..

i belive if u learn somewhere else.. its also the same.. where the teacher juz gives u a list to memorise the kanji with furigana of course.

sidenote.. maybe is coz i've learnt before most of the stuff tats y i find jcs quite good.. but to me i feel tat the teacher is very clear in her explanation for using which particle in which forms...

I am currently studying jap at bunka, elementary 2 and I'm having a great time there. I guess it's partly because I was fortunately to get good, friendly teachers for both elementary 1 and 2.

There were some comments saying that the pace in bunka is fast. hmm...imho it's not that bad. I personally feel that it's quite manageable as long as u do the homework given after every lesson. The teachers do revision of things taught in the previous lesson at the start of each new lesson too...

yea...the pace of inter 1 is much much faster than elementary. there are lots of grammar to learn within a short time, plus there are 2 tests =)

Im studying for both reasons. Totally agree that foundation is important. But worry about the time factor because of my job. Also got a problem, if dun sleep enuf, will get dizzy spells. Of coz, cost is another aspect.

How is the homework load btw? If I faithfully do the homeworks, to keep on pace with the lessons is not an issue right?

Is it true that its disadvantage to have a big class? I tot Kanji is needed for the exam too?

JCS registration over... reply was wait until year end. JCS really only have a day for registration for all their classes? Even the intensive module?

I was hoping to start like next month...
