Hey can anyone give any advice or provide anything you heard abt studying Japanese in Japan? I want to go to Japan every year for a month to let my oral skills catch up with reading skills as well as to accelerate my learning process.

I've got some qns. Like, is a homestay better? I prefer a little privacy but if a homestay is gg to help me in my Japanese than staying in a shared apartment or dorm with Japanese uni students, then I would rather try. Any personal reviews on certain schools? As for my level, I'm currently studying for JLPT 3.

Any any opinion will be good! Thanks!!!

Hi,i think it's not very good to accelerate your learning process. It's better to learn it slowly... Based on my experience. But well, it's up to individual.

if you have a bit of money, you can go for a short course. on one of my trips to japan, i met my friend's friend who was there to study a 3-month course. she took it as her "graduation trip" because that time she just finished her mass com degree.

i also have friends who went japan for 1 year of studies, either to a prep school, or at a uni after they finished their studies. this is the fastest way to master your japanese within a short time.

homestay is also not bad, because you can try to brush up your japanese with family over there. however, you might need to take note of their lifestyle, because it is really different from singapore.

hi a qn to ask.how come bunka can offer their elementary lessons completed in 2mths bt nt e rest? are they competent in teachin? lets say i take elementary 1 elsewhere i can start e2 at bunka np rite?

Put it this way, every school has a standard of what they study until. For example.

For Hougang
For 20 lessons u can learn the following:
Lesson 1 How to Identify a Person
Lesson 2 How to Identify a Thing
Lesson 3 How to Identify a Place
Lesson 4 How to Tell Time and Days of a Week / Basic Usage of Japanese Verb
Lesson 5 How to Tell Days of The Month / Usage of Directional Verb
Lesson 6 How to Describe What You Do (Direct Object of Verb)
Lesson 7 How to Show Means and How to Say Give or Get
Lesson 8 How to Show How Things, Persons and Animals are (Adjective)
Lesson 9 How to Show The Characteristics
Lesson 10 How to Say Where Things or Persons is/ Exists

For Bunka, it might be something else. If you wanna study at Bunka, it would be best to check out what they can teach u in 2 months.

1 month is a bit hard to really learn anything. if you have the time, save up a bit more, and stay longer. during that time, do some baito over there to earn your expenses ? my friends told me they used to work at a singaporean owner restaurant selling chilli crabs. i feel that you can get some keigo exposure on baito too.

as my friends say staying in japan is quite fun, but provided you are able to endure. most of them stayed alone. either they stayed with the uni dorm with lots of foreigners (but its hard to get a place there) or a small apartment that is really tiny. i saw a picture of that. its just a bed on top of a work desk (see ikea furniture design) and that's all. she used to bring a coin pouch when she is showering because her shared-shower is coin-operated. the kitchen and toilets are all shared. she spent around 70,000 to 80,000 for that 1 year (school fees included)

either that, or you don't study in tokyo. study somewhere else where it is cheaper.

if you are worrying about speaking japanese, most families can communicate in english, but they are a bit weak. one of my japanese teachers went there to study with zero knowledge of japanese and managed to made it in the end.

i need to think and gather my thoughts before i speak japanese too. yappari, sg de japanese exposure is too little. i'm still kinda weak. maybe i need to find baito in singapore to brush up. haha~

まああ。。my level still quite ok... sure need some time to gather thoughts... but i guess the Japanese are quite patient to listen to what u have to say and the best part... they try to help u along... =)

its a good thing they help you. =)

most of the time, the expressions are different from what we learnt, so we need the correct "switch-over" in this case.

Studying Japanese in Japan
I have 2 friends with almost zero knowledge in the language and got a JLPT level 1 in 1 year...

A month is good provided u have Japanese friends there, this is how I try 2 practise my Jap when i head over to Japan...

a homestay is better so that u can
1) know more friends - 1 of my penpal i know was that her family hosted me and my friend
2) know the dialect / slang of that area - it depends on region to region...
3) Know the culture - Its fun if u are in during festive season
4) JLPT 3 is quite ok for basic conversation... remember that the accent is SUPER impt when u talk 2 japanese...

OH that chilli crab shop? Saw it on TV last time. Haha.

the "ben" part is quite fun actually...

for me, i'm into kansai ben. most comedians come from kansai and it is widely used in manga.
i believe you have come across some of them already. some of it is used too often that it is treated as Japanese already.

for example: 「あかん」 means 「だめ」 and 「あほ」 means 「ばか」.
