hey guys, it's the summer holidays for us in the local universities and I wanna spend some time picking up Japanese. Where's a good place to start? I've read up on Centers like Bunka and Inoue.

Any thoughts?

I've been wanting to take up 'official' lessons for Japanese so I Googled for options and came across this forum/thread. I've read through the whole 269 pages of this thread. Haha.. XD I just don't like the idea of asking something that's already been asked and troubling others to repeat the same answers. So I diligently went through all those pages... ^_^;

I find the information provided very comprehensive and informative. And it made me realise that learning Japanese is quite tough. x_x So after reading what all of you have to say about the various schools, I finally made a decision. I will go down to register with the school soon. ^_^

I just want to thank all of you for all the information. It's been a really great help. =)

$30+ to $40+

as for non-member discount... normally during holiday season; such as december or something, if i'm not wrong. but its very rare. if u need to buy many books, then might as well get the kino member card.

21st May to 23rd May kino will be having a 20% discount on all books for members (usual is 10% only), so i think its a good time to buy books if u need...

Well, from what I've read about IKOMA, it seems like it's more structured and it is the best place to go if I want to take up JLPT. As of now, I only want to get exposure and do not intend to take up JLPT yet. (money and time issues ) So I'll wait until I can get really serious about it (and until I've got more money. ) and go to the best school (in my opinion) for it. Hee~ ^_^

Why is it that as we go to higher level of studies the Japanese text does not leave a blank space after each particle as in many elementary textbook? Reading is more difficult if there is no blank space.

there isn't supposed to be any space after the particles as far as i know

in this case, the elementary textbook was in a way making ur life easier so the high level textbooks are getting u used to normal japanese writing (without spaces after partciles)

3 would be the best...

I agree with what Niaoson said.
In fact, by end of JLPT 3, you are "supposed" to know where are the particles in each sentence. If you aren't sure, you might have face problems reading JLPT 1/2 passages.

I guess each of us have our own unique learning experience.
I asked this question because sometimes I got stuck when the teacher wanted me to read a passage aloud in class. No problem in reading elementary text.
