Don't think need [ when I signed up 9mths ago, they did not ask for it ] but the name that you use when you sign up will be used in your certificate when you finish Elementary 2, Intermediate 4 and when you sign up for JLPT through the school. So you might want to use the name on your ID / NRIC if you want to use the certificates for purposes other than decoration.

when you buy, please select SAL or 航空便, it's cheaper... 航空便 is faster, of course....

*Word of Caution*
hmm~ i can tell you that electronic dictionaries can only help you to a certain extend lor. coz some of the words are very bi-myo 微妙, such that its hard for the dictionary to explain properly. dictionaries can no doubt provide you the meanings for the words and has a few examples and sentences to help you understand the usage better, but is not able to help you fully.

use chinese for example:
开心
心花怒放
of course, we know both means happiness. but the first one is just happiness that could be used for any events that make you happy. however, 心花怒放 is only used in boy-girl-relationships.

*dictionary might explain that both words mean happiness but doesn't tell you how exactly you use it in a sentence.

A couple of friends and I will be registering for japanese lessons in August. We want to get some part-time lessons, maybe once a week. After browsing most of the major Japanese language schools in Singapore, we are stuck between either Inoue or Bunka.

Can anyone share the feedback etc? We plan to take all the way until at least JLPT 4 level. None of us have any prior experience for Japanese classes.

Inoue Pro (Elementary 1 + 2 +3):

  • At least 12 hours less in total course hrs compared to Bunka (84 vs 96/102)
  • Costs $56 less compared to Bunka after textbooks, GST and registration factored in

Bunka Pro (Elementary 1 + 2 , Intemediate 1 + 2)

  • Supposedly better method of teaching Japanese which helps you learn faster / more effectively
  • More course hours which means more interaction with the teacher

After reading most of the threads on Japanese studies in here, can anyone provide any first person perspective as well?

1. Identify what do you hope to achieve after you finish studying JLPT 4? To be able to speak? To be able to understand a bit of anime? etc

You can't compare like this, because each school teach the syllabus differently. Also you need to factor in the breaks that you get (15 mins or 30 mins break?)

I ever went to a school that gave 30 mins break. The lesson was 3 hours... So in the end, you are paying "more" for a 2.5 hours lesson.

My personal aim is to take until jlpt 4 standard, to be able to converse in japanese and to understand the language. They never list the break time on the website...

but personally, which do you think is better?
