I think I am qualified for the title of this post. I started learning Japanese 5 and a half years ago after asking in this very same thread and several months earlier I actually asked what is the level needed to chat with girls....

So far for the past 5 years, I have only covered through self study:
- 10 chapters of Minna no Nihongo
- half a book of Japanese for Busy people
- 3 chapters of Genki I
- flipped through some Japanese gaming magazine

What advice can you give me in order to reach my goal ( the level needed to chat with girls)?

Personally, I don't think the self study approach suits u. U may wanna enrol in a formal classroom style of study if you are still keen to learn Japanese.

Good Luck! :D

1. Get into a school
2. Start chatting with girls

Hi everyone , I'm planning to take up Japanese courses in a language school and would like to ask if anyone have any recommendation . I will skimmed through most pages of the thread and have a general ideas of how the schools' structures are like but would like to seek a second opinion still .

A little background , I have been self-studying Japanese for a month now and have approximately finish Genki 1 ( with a chapter left or so ) and while I could comprehend most of it on my own . I find that the further I go , the more of the earlier content I tend to forget so I would like to go to an actual school . I'm also not aiming to definitely do JLPT as a goal (a gauge of level yes but it's not my ultimate aim for studying Japanese ) . I'm looking for a school that would focus on grammar and kanji mostly as I'm looking to acquire reading comprehension and is considering Bunka seems that seems to be the focus there and would like to seek fellow Japanese learners' opinions .

barbie, on a gauge of 10 (0 being the worst, 10 being the highest), how well do you gauge ur own speaking skills?

Diamondmine: Different people have different reasons for wanting to study. You should know what you want first before committing... Learning Japanese is not an easy journey.

Well , I want to focus primarily on reading skills as I would like to be able to read Japanese novels and such . While speaking is definitely useful it's not my top priority

omg I think i should prob get into a class.. ever since grad, i have yet to touch my books, even if i have touched them, still the same old chpt. Totally lack self discipline.

Want to check, if there's any sch that is more flexible eg if I need to ot then cannot attend class that day, can I go for another class of the same week? Also is there any sch that uses minna no nihongo? Coz I have bought them with e intention to study on my own 2 yrs ago=:p

あけおめ、ことよろ!

Ikoma uses minna no nihongo, I think JCS as well.

actually...to be honest, while going for classes helps a bit, most of the time it boils down to your self-discipline in studying. lol

Maybe 0-1, though I'm currently at around N2. =:p=:p=:p broken japanese, english + japanese words mixed in. Haa, need to find the need for speaking, as currently, reading, and listening probably top priority. So I thought if my N2 gets better, then I'll focus on speaking.
