not all of them

a small amount of them who really know what they are doing and are able to capitalize are able to do that.

u can take accountants out of the picture. they either work till retirement age or die young due to liver damage from working overtime

Ha, ha, thought profit centre focus is more on revenue, their balance sheet, whether final figures red or black, with or without parenthesis, whereas cost centre is a one-way, no return expenditure.. once blown unlikely recoverable.

Anyway, bankers, lawyers and accountants are known to be able to retire young comfortably. Engineer? Worked past their retirement age, or die young..:D

yeah thats right.
small correction, not revenue. profits!

yeah, cost is a one way thing. no one appreciates even if u reduce cost by 1million.

but ppl can remember u better if u achieve 1mill sales hahaha

Boss employ u is not to spend money but make money. So profit center get what they asked for but cost center QQQ.

Are you a sales engineer? Though I do not know what they do, but based on its title, I guess they are profit centers.

cost center is the backup for the profit center. but a lot of bosses failed to understand that. when it's time for budgetting it is always the cost centers kena.

even our mrt the same thing. want to generate more revenues by having more lines, more trains, less intervals and more customers, but the maintenance never follow up proportionately.

influx of cheap foreign engineers will eventually overrun local engineering, and what is keeping the team local now is perhaps the S in Smrt.

Depending on the complexity of the products a sales person is selling, most sales person are not remotely qualified to understand the nitty gritty and the indepth things that they are selling.

Its up to the "Sales Engineers", or in IT, we call it "Pre-Sales" to qualify, what to sell, what to propose, and how to do. Obviously within pre-sales there are also differentiation. What differentiate the average from the good is the fact that the average pre-sales sells a product.

A good pre-sales can sell anything. A good pre-sales need to be a thinker. To identify product strengths and weakness. To pitch a solution and a vision, not a product, to present and to get customer buy-in. So all in all, a people's engineer loh.

To use a more common example. Buying of cars. People would be more attuned to trust the sales person, if they are a trained car mechanic, and they tell you honestly the good and the bad of the 2nd hand vehicle that you are buying. He could probably tell you how to zhng, how you can do this, what are the common issues etc and a buyer would probably feel more comfy with them. This as compared to a sales person who knows nuts about cars, and only can tell you this car is XXXkg, how many HP, yadda yadda yadda.

I am a service engineer in a Japanese MNC. I think it is quite good to work in a MNC as an engineer. Do not work in a local company in that position. I have done that before and the life was tough/not-worthwhile.

Yup, being an engineer in Singapore has no future!

After many years of hard study and long hours of sacrifice as far as family life is concerned, Singapore 'upper-class' people strongly believed that non engineering background person could manage SMRT. That time, many people had doubted that woman but to no avail. According to the report, it hinted that many mid level and experienced engineers left SMRT during her era.

Why? Cos local engineers are not valued in Singapore. Any good things(profitability) are the effort of non engineering people and the bad things always belong to the engineers. That ft woman is still earning big bucks in another company while the loyal engineers and technical staff are solving the ****s created...and in the near future I guess the commuters would have to pay for her 'great' leadership.

Tell me... what is the point of being an engineer in Singapore when a non engineer can take over the helm of an engineering company with the support of LTA? Are we telling our younger generation that one can be a publicly well known lousy leader of a company and still be rich and successful? One thing is certain.. I would never ask my children to be an engineer!

Not just Engineers, I supposed local workers in general are just as "futureless" (long working hours, disproportionate pays) as Engineers lor.

Unless of cos, he's a successful banker/doctor/lawyer/businessman/politician lor.

Who are you to decide people's future ?:s8: Just because someone say something you don't agree ? :s22:

EEE, ME and CE were used to be hot subject in uni. Now, it's Chem Eng and Bio Tech. The policy makers have decided to ditch mfg and focus on high tech mfg and service. Subject like Mass Comm and Business are in demand. From the profile of students selecting poly/uni courses and it's entry requirement already point to the sunset of engineering(EEE, CE and ME).

Hahaha.. thanks for supporting that engineer has no future. Everyone blames the engineers...who else right ? :s13:

The high paying management has all the money and power to do whatever they like.. now the government is supporting SMRT with billions of dollars pumping in soon and the FT ex-leader is still earning big bucks and driving her flashy car while her ex-employees who worked hard under her once are clearing the mess and getting the hits from the commuters...

I am really wondering ... Has our country changed so much to the extend that people are all driven by greeds and fast wins? SMRT used to sing that they have made huge profits under the "skirt" of that retailer... Look at the BIG losses it is going to face now!!! At whose expense??? Who is the ultimate winner of the whole thing?? You tell me...

This is a demaging statement.

Again you are talking about the old day. Any one after bill gate and Steve job? Succeed in the similar way? What is it got to do with pap in the first place?
Using the same logic you use, I would blame it to wp or any opposition. Because they never united and therefore put us into this environment!

Tell me why USA is in deep economic trouble now? Their problem,as you mention - is the government do not have absolute power to push something going. So well say in your example.

If you love "absolute power" so much, why don't you migrate to non-democratic countries like NKorea, China or Arab countries instead har? I'm sure the govt's power over there are "absolute" enough to your liking!

Every system have its pros and cons, rarely do I see people like you who only knows how to blindly believe what ruling party want you to believe. (Of cos ruling party would tell you absolute power is good non-absolute power is bad since it's to their advantage.. Luckily not all SIngaporeans are as gullible as you else we'll be doomed liao! )
