Oh its the Alienware R3 featured in the video? The design all too similar I can't really tell. Their 15"6 inch model only got R2.

I guess Alienware is pay for what you get. You get powerful gaming performance, superb graphics and portability and mobility. But I guess they can command such price because of the design that they have incorporated into the notebook.

The lighting colour on the back of the notebook is certainly quite attractive.

I think it looks like the 15.6" model too, I've seen the 17" model it's so big compared to a normal 15" laptop. with the screen closed its easily 2 inches

To go or not to go?

Go if you need to.

Unboxing Video (quite through - if anyone interested)

Complete disassemble

I like the performance-packed and its delicious design (including the logo), the Alienware M17 R3 notebook is definitely a top-level 17-inch gaming machine. This notebook definitely is a fantastic desktop replacement albeit for the weight. Excellent for those who prefers less cluttered desk area with high-end desktop specs.

btw, how your know is alienware m17 R3 laptop :o? From the picture the laptop looks kinda big it can be 15, 17 or 18, no ?

Alienware Graphics Amplifier is not only just a simple external PCIe graphics card box but also functions as a docking station with another 4 full speed USB 3.0 ports that is greatly suited to let me run my desktop gaming keyboard and mouse and also some external disk drives. Dell Alienware team has taken and adapt the idea from 2-in-1 convertible tablet/laptops into this external dock very well as it finally resolves the long standing issue to enable powerful, yet power hungry PC components with minimum tradeoffs on mobility devices.

By shifting the biggest problem out of the laptop chassis, gaming laptop engineers no longer need to rack their brains hard to squeeze in higher end graphics chip into the limited puny laptop chassis real estate and also do not need huge heatsink and many fans to cool them down adequately, which usually have to resort into increasing laptop size and weight, that is going against the portability of the laptop. They can now simply affix the laptop with a mid range tier graphics and cooling solution reasonably small to keep laptop size in check and maintain the balance, while getting the optional powerful performance when you need it. This is just like how convertible tablets solves battery life issue with extra battery pack on the separate keyboard dock. :vijayadmin:

The dell alienware in the video is which model ah?
Only able to see the backing so cannot tell what's in front of the screen. But looking at the size relative to the desktop, i guess it is the 15" model

Bear in mind that though this external Alienware Graphics Amplifier is a plug-and-play solution but it doesn't work exactly like Nvidia Optimus/AMD Dynamic Switchable Graphics such that you can toggle between internal discrete and external graphics both ways while laptop is operating.

If you got to leave the place with your Alienware notebook, you need to shut down the entire laptop first and then to plug out the amplifier cable (or vice versa also possible) and then turn it on to switch it back to internal discrete graphics. Laptop will automatic goes into shutdown once you plug out the amplifier cable while the laptop is still turned on. In this mode, sleep function will also be disabled, leaving only shutdown option available.

This can potentially cause data loss issue to many as people may accidentally forgot to save their work on the notebook right before plugging out the amplifier cable, thinking that it is a 2-way plug-and-play dock as it seem to be one since you can plug in to operate while laptop is already on.

can you find laptop components for sale? like 970M or 980M?

Online / overseas can buy. I always buy parts like this through overseas merchant

I think this Dell Alienware m17 R3 laptop is worth considering if infuture it will be compatible for Nvidia 990M? :s13:

As for me, I can tell a difference between non-retina and retina macbook. Text are jaggyer and pictures colour are more smeary. Dell useing 4k will have more pixel than Apple, and that is not bad when the insprion is more of a mainstream model. It is good someone is bringing good quality 2d Windows desktop for everyone

But for the Dell Inspiron 15 7000, it is really negligible for the 15" screen when I saw it in the shop. I don't see any differences compared to other screens in the same shop.
Sizewise, it is really bad for laptop. Look like the trend for BIG is coming back again, same as mobile phones. Years back, make the products, like netbooks and 4" screens for phone, as small as possible, and now as big as possible.

I certainly don't mind having 4k UHD or higher resolution but on TV, bigger screen.

I wonder if its possible for the 4k UHD Touchscreen such as the one installed in the Dell Inspirion 15 7000 to use a 1080p resolution when its not required. Means can toggle inbetween different resolutions.
Sony Xperia Z5 Premium has this technology in place to help preserve long battery life. The 4k screen is only used when watching media.

Wow, is it new technology, toggle to choose playing in 4k or FHD? it is the same thing used in youtube where we can choose to play in higher resolutions?

I don't think Windows support auto switching of resolution. Maybe in near future, Dell will make a power app for 4k laptop that when you plug in the wall socket, it will run native resolution, and when on the road, you have a choice of lower resolution. Until then, you can manually switch resolution?

 THis is good! Certainly welcome this, I think other than marketing, Dell certainly get some new ideas for their R&D to work on in this campaign.

I also no need for an ODD for my laptop. Does the normal Dell Inspiron 15 7000 comes with ODD if yes, can remove?
No, did not see it at all, I think now can support sd card and thumbdrive is good enough. Optical drive is not necessary.
