The graphics amplifier is a smart solution as Dell do not need to put the latest Nvidia mobile GTX980 in their alienware.

http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-980
The gpu is a full GTX980, very fast but very hot and big to cool inside a laptop.

If the 3-4KG alienware is heavy, imagine what more weight will be added to laptops when you have GTX980 inside.

True, this Graphics Amplifier option will also help to reduce the heat generation in Alienware laptop. :)

Get Dell Inspiron 15 7000 for both home use and other purpose. This is because Dell Inspiron 15 7000 is light and portable. Dell Inspiron 24 7000 unless you want to use the Intel® RealSense™ 3D Camera.

Just got to know we can get the Alienware 15" or 17"laptops without Alienware Graphics Amplifier, but its price still like about 50% more than Inspiron 15 7000.

Of coz these 2 series are totally different spec category people and it looks silly if I compared them based on their prices.

Is it really necessary to have Triple Nvidia Geforce GTX 980 Ti running in SLI?
An Alienware 17 with Alienware Graphics Amplifier should be enough for a good gaming experience.

If not wrong, Alienware Graphics Amplifier can only support 1 desktop graphic card on a go. With better desktop GPU, I think the gaming experience on Alienware 17 R3 will ne wonderful. :D

You are right, i found this is a 'cheap' Alienware 15 R5 build, comparable build from the others like Asus, MSI, Aftershock are around there without Dell pro-support and accidental coverage.

Not forget the price different between them is due to Dell had added additional SSD for those high-end Alienware 15 or 17 models plus upgraded the video graphic card from GTX 970M to 980M. 

One more thing to take note, the Alienware Graphics Amplifier only works with the latest generation Alienware laptops like Alienware 13 R2 , 15 R2, 17 R3 etc. The Alienware Alpha has no connection for the Graphics amplifier.

The price is expensive due to their top performance. Not that expensive compared to other gaming laptops of similar performance and there is Alienware Graphics Amplifier.

Not all model bundled with Alienware Graphics Amplifier, it is an optional item, so price of Alienware 15R or Alienware 17R can be 'cheaper' without this. :)

Most time during IT show, the graphics amplifier is a PWP with alienware laptops. In all honesty, the price is too high to buy alone. It is a good optional choice for the more privileged gamers to zhng their already high end laptops. It is cool looking to pair the alien inspired design of alienware laptops with another box besides it to provides more graphics power.

Ohayo is half way there! She is like Bayern Munich running away with the league. Getting aa XPS 13 serves as a helpful secondary computer on the move. It is a nice size and with the latest model revision. Gxgx

I think for non serious gamers, can consider to get Dell Alienware 15 R2 or ALienware 17 R3 without Alienware Graphics Amplifier, IIRC the price can be cheaper by ~$700. ;)

I personally believe FHD model of the 17 R3 is more than enough to max out games. It's essentially having a sub GTX 970 graphics card to power a FHD resolution. More than easy to accomplish.

SSD should be the norm for all gaming laptop. Or as least SSHD.

I mean, if ultrabooks can add them, why not gaming notebooks like the Alienware 15 17 laptops too? SSDs use less power which means long battery life, provides best gaming performance due to short load times.

Gamers don't mind forking out extra dollars anyway. Surely you will expect your laptop cost over SGD2.5k to boot faster than a ultrabook which cost half the price.
