Yes the Alienware 17 R3 is very heavy by laptop standards but it is still portable. You have the freedom to play on your bed, on your desk, connect to your large screen TV, bring it along when visiting relatives. You can game anywhere with the GTX980M, it has enough power to play all console games port till next PS5 come out!

I think that is what the new video is trying to show. A desktop has all the power and value, but it gets stuck in place. In fairness, one can build a very powerful mitx desktop now but the casing is still not as portable and a closed Alienware 17 R3.

The video is trying to show that the Alienware laptop paired with the Graphics Amplifier and the Dell PC are both perfectly capable of high performance gaming.

Except that the Alienware 15 can provide mobility and portability to the user.

Using Laptop has its perks. No more excess cabling and messy workstations. All you need is a charger at bare minimum. Mouse is for convenience.

No point having DVD. The last time i used the DVD drive in my desktop PC is just to install driver. In fact, you can download newest driver for most devices now online anyway.

In fact, the Alienware notebooks also dont have them. Take up extra space. Must remove to make it a thin gaming laptop. Thats why most notebook like the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 dont include it too. Would you sacrifice this component to make your laptop slimmer and to add powerful performance graphics and mobility? I would.

I guess having the DVD tray is pretty obsolete now, since everyone don't include them anymore.

Bluray need special software to run it so it will add to the cost. Most people watch blurays on their TVs anyway since its bigger screen. The DVD player can be cheaper than the software itself :s13::s22:

Yeah optical disk drives are on their verge to obsolescence with the advent of flash memory storage. So huge size in comparison to today's PC parts, yet of lesser and lesser utility these days. Don't see how it is useful nowadays apart from ripping lossless album tracks or install older games. And they also takes up much of the puny laptop chassis real estate, which is rather much needed by other power hungry components gasping for space to cool and perform well adequately.

With the wise decision to removal of ODDs, Alienware has been capable at delivering both thinner builds, and greater specs like even higher-end CPU and graphics card, larger storage capacities, greater battery size as evidently seen with its latest iteration of Alienware R2 & R3 laptops.

Just got to know we can get the Alienware 15" or 17"laptops without Alienware Graphics Amplifier, but its price still like about 50% more than Inspiron 15 7000.

Of coz these 2 series are totally different spec category people and it looks silly if I compared them based on their prices.

Alienware got branding wor. Alienware is one of the most established brands for gamers.

Also, all that fancy lighting and the design will surely add to the cost.

they are like the pioneer branding for 'gaming laptop'. last time when people ask about gaming laptops it's only Alienware. at least now there are more competitors that are more worth the money.

other competitors also starting to have fancy lighting too, so the appeal for Alienware dying down already.

I just touched touch the insprion 15 7000 and realised the top frame is made of solid aluminum, no keyboard flexing. I think the track pad is also made of metal too. The lid cover and base is made of soft rubber, all in it feels very well constructed.

Most time during IT show, the graphics amplifier is a PWP with alienware laptops. In all honesty, the price is too high to buy alone. It is a good optional choice for the more privileged gamers to zhng their already high end laptops. It is cool looking to pair the alien inspired design of alienware laptops with another box besides it to provides more graphics power.

They should make the Alienware Graphics Amplifier free with purchase :s13:

but PWP at least will tempt some buyers.. but not to mention they have to go buy their own graphics card if they wish to use it for additional graphics power.

wah, if everything metal will give off premium feeling which imo, should be basic these days. ha ha.

True, this Graphics Amplifier option will also help to reduce the heat generation in Alienware laptop. :)

With the availability of the Graphics Amplifier, laptop's internal discrete graphics adapter can be disabled on hardware level when plugged into the amplifier, removing GPU TDP on the heatsink.

This vacant TDP can now be tapped by the Core i7 processor to cool itself down better. Hence, maintaining its peak clock much longer, and ensuring ever higher maximum performance for everything. Fan inside the laptop chassis also don't need to spin as much to cool and will be quieter running. Consequently, user also no longer feel as hot on the keyboard and mousepad area, and also feel much less vibration by the lower speed running fan, making typing and navigating experience much more comfortable.. Yet you get higher graphics performance from the amplifier. Who doesn't love that?

Dell Alienware 17 R3 has a weight of 3.8KG and a price tag of $3,999.00, such weight unable to carry out without a trolley bag

I wonder how many can afford such prices, getting Dell inspiron 24 7000 AIO would be more logical for home use

you will surprised that parents these days are willing to spend extravagant to their kids without much thoughts :s13:

The Dell Alienware m17 R3 is definitely not going to be in my shopping list :o

Yes it does give off a premium feel and it is rather slim. There is a cheaper dual core model at 1399 and up against comparable brands of this price and specs, the quality of the 15 7000 insprion is better.

This is Dell economic of scale advantage where the design is for higher end models, but it trickles down to lower specs models

People who are rich enough to purchase these Alienware laptops are more likely to spend a bit more, at the small fraction of their laptop, to get this amplifier.

This Graphics Amplifier also solves the complexity and hassle buyers need to face if they were to build a DIY PC. Choosing from countless choice of PC parts to assembly and configuring system themselves.

Alienware laptop owners only need to hoot graphics card of their choice, much simple enough. Then install graphics card into the only PCIe slot inside the box, plug in the PCIe cable, install driver on the laptop, and they are good to go. That easy!

Having this amplifier is also much easier than upgrading the MXM based removable discrete graphics card on the laptop, where you need to remove almost every single internal part to reach down for the MXM card. MXM cards are also a lot less available than regular desktop graphics cards. You also need to clean the heatsink and reapply the thermal paste, which is going to be a tedious and scary journey, even for amateurs.
