I would go for laptop as Alienware R3 laptop seems nice. Alienware R3 laptop is i7 has 17.3 inch UHD IGZO IPS Anti-Glare 400-nits display screen and best of all GTX 980M.
Also it comes with Creative Sound Core3D-EX Audio with Creative Soundblaster Pro Studio Software. There is Alienware Graphics Amplifier which is very suitable for gaming as it pushes the frame rates up.
The performance is much better than Dell Inspiron 15 7000 gaming laptop and perfect for gaming.

Alienware R3 laptop though performances higher than Dell Inspiron 15 7000 but the price and weight was almost double ~

bringing out Alienware R3 17" laptop in public transport is like carrying a bag of rice~

Seems like everyone is attacking the weight of Dell Alienware m17x r3 laptop for its lack of portability. :s13:

Yeah, thus i believe this Dell Alienware m17x r3 and above are designed as a desktop replacement than a laptop.

I suppose it acts like a mini PC tower. Luckily the Alienware Graphics Amplifier is still quite small in size as seen in the video. Just connect to enjoy greater and more powerful graphic performance when you need it (at home).

The Alienware 15 notebook + Alienware Graphics Amplifier is the perfect solution for gamers who want mobility and portability on the go, while powerful gaming performance at home.
It doesn't act like a mini tower, but more like another half of a modular PC with only some of the parts. Very much liken to the keyboard base and tablet section of Microsoft Surface Book. You get the main parts required minimally to operate the tablet, and you get extra battery pack, discrete graphics and peripherals from the keyboard base section. You get mobility performance outside, desktop performance at home. Best of both worlds.

And fortunately Alienware 13 from last year already supported the amplifier PCIe cable interface, as well as all Alienware R2 laptop lineup for this year. So you can have the very same desktop graphics performance on the lightweight 13" Alienware R2!

Not to mention, the Alienware Graphic Amplifier does not come with any gpu, so you need to spend more money (or use your spare/old/existing gpu) :s22:

Maybe in my opinion the intel realsense 3d camera technology is still pretty immature enough to be implemented mainstream into either the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 or the Dell Alienware laptop series

yup i agree.

tho im expecting the intel realsense technology to be something very mainstream say in 5 years time.

Dell Alienware is a portable high performance gaming laptop without sacrifice the dimension .

However, the weight of Alienware 15 R2 is 3.2KG is much more heavier than Dell Inspiron 15 7000, not as easy as just slot into backpack.

But again Dell Alienware does not have Intel Realsense Camera or 4K UHD touchscreen, a disappointment when other Dell laptops having better specs at cheaper pricing.

 3.2kg for Dell Alienware is indeed heavy. Somemore, haven't include the bag, power plug and accessories.

But for gaming, why Alienware doesn't have 4k uhd touchscreen? I can understand that Intel Realsense Camera isn't readily available because not many big game titles have this yet.

Wah, so need to top up extra if you need additional gpu for gaming on the Dell Alienware R3 series laptop? I thought the Alienware Graphic Amplifier will provide graphics card as well. Looks like i am wrong.

From all these post really learn a lot of new technology that i dont even know

Update on 9 November

Video Teaser for Week 3: Alienware

To go or not to go?

We'll be revealing Part 2 of this video on Friday, 13 November. Watch this space!

Yay this week is really Dell Alienware laptop! This is something that i've always seen outside but becauase price is too steep for gaming so i never think of getting it. :p

If I'm hardcore on gaming, i would opt for desktop. Maybe that's what all my friends tell me lol. Do gamers really bring their laptop everywhere they go ma?

Just wondering why some of you guys mentioned Dell Alienware R2 and R3, but i googled they look very similar leh. How to differentitate between them? Pardon me, the one in the video is Dell Alienware R2 and R3 laptop :s11:

if you search Inspiron 15 7000 via the search function in their website, the product descriptions in the search results still mentioned about optional 4k Ultra HD display, but once you clicked into it, no more.

Nice observations you've got there. Just tried it, same result too. If we deep dive the customization for Dell Alienware laptop i wonder will have hidden upgrades or not :s13:

It will work with Windows 10 and Skylake 6 generation cpu only. It is a hardware feature of Skylake
In theory it should work well for laptop in giving the best performance in daily uses while conservative on the battery. Imagine before Skylake, you need 5 steps running before you can fly and 10 steps braking before you come to a halt.
With Dell latest products on Skylake, you can vertical take off and landing. You can reach your destination faster and save fuel on the extra 15 steps
So did you manage to try out the realsense technology/camera in inspiron 24 7000 at J8?

But for the Dell Inspiron 15 7000, it is really negligible for the 15" screen when I saw it in the shop. I don't see any differences compared to other screens in the same shop.
Sizewise, it is really bad for laptop. Look like the trend for BIG is coming back again, same as mobile phones. Years back, make the products, like netbooks and 4" screens for phone, as small as possible, and now as big as possible.

I certainly don't mind having 4k UHD or higher resolution but on TV, bigger screen.

If big and light i will consider, if big and heavy...

Looking at the weigh of the Dell Alienware m17x r3 laptop one cant help but to know that the machine is more of a desktop replacement than a portable carry laptop.

think the inspiron is at 2.6kg. for guys still ok. but females, i dont think they will want this.

for me to carry this size of laptop, i must have a backpack. laptop sling bag i cannot tahan. cause need to keep run around. on backpack, not an issue.

For Inspiron 2.6kg, the weight is still bearable for me, but if it's a daily affair i prefer <2kg because after adding in misc stuffs, will be just nice not too burden on the shoulder.

For Dell Alienware laptop, i heard it's much heavier. So not many would be happy lugging that over long distance. Later become like signal set lol.

Weight very hard to minimize if want to keep the gaming look. All that lighting will surely take up bulk and adds to the weight of the notebook. It is already pretty amazing that Alienware is able to keep it a thin gaming laptop.

With such powerful graphic performance, its a trade off which gamers have to bear.

The biggest shortfall of this Alienware Graphics Amplifier is the inability to support SLI configuration with the internal discrete graphics. That is really unfortunate that gamers cannot harness gaming performance from both discrete graphics cards, potentially saving gamers substantial amount of cash at improving performance on the cheap. This is due to with Graphics Amplifier plugged in, internal discrete graphics will be disabled on hardware level. Hence, discrete graphics cards are not able see each other to operate SLI.

Then again, even if it supports SLI, GTX 960M/970M/980M can only SLI with their GM107/206/204 counterpart desktop equivalents which commonly offers only 2GB GDDR5 VRAM, that can still bottleneck SLI configuration by 4K resolution screens on these Alienware laptops, producing potential stutters s VRAM gets fully choked from massive texture data...

Gaming laptops in Singapore are limited to alienware, msi, gigabyte, Razer and Aftershock.

Among them, I feel safest with Dell because of the excellent pro support. And that is important because gaming laptop generate lots of heat and power going through the circuit. You can feel confidence Dell will come down and replace any spoilt parts the next day instead of having to deal with service center in some ulu parts of Singapore and there is good chance parts are not available and takes weeks of waiting.

Alienware 17 are right up there with the rest. The quality of the enclosure is very solid if you go down and touch the real thing. Alienware also has toned down the over aggressive gaming design for a more subtle look.

I would definitely put alienware 15 and 17 as a desktop gaming replacement if I am looking out for one!

Alienware 17 seems very upgradable
