Since windows 8 and above, we are able to use touchscreen to navigate in the OS. Using touchscreen would be more accurate and faster in navigating around the software
So Dell Inspiron 7000 series able to utilised the full function of Windows 8, while Alienware still a step behind, though for gamers, the laptop was not always for games, there can be used for productivity software, designing software, etc
Msi is called gaming dock but based on the date released, i would say Alienware is the first one to release their Graphics Amplifier.
not exactly a silly invention for a laptop, the Alienware Graphics Amplifier provide an ultimate gaming experience where you can use your laptop like a desktop as you can connect the monitor, keyboard as well as mouse to the Graphics Amplifer.
it gives you the power of a desktop graphics card and pushes up the frame rates to higher levels. it is also future proof as you can just change the graphics card to newer and more powerful one rather than buying a new laptop.
What happen if in future new Dell Alienware laptop decided to have a new connector to the new Graphics Amplifier? Are we able to RAID using one HDD and one SSD in Dell Alienware R3 Laptops since there was an extra SATA slot?apparently you can do RAID setup on Alienware systems

A picture of the exposed 4 m2 expansion bays, the easily accessible back panel where you upgrade the ram and 2.5" harddisk. You can safely do without voiding the warranty. Alienware 17 can be self diy to be as powerful storage as desktop PC
I also find it distracting. Old man here, I can't even stand working in a dim environment with my old trusty PC, a normal intel i3...looks cool but not very partical unless you wanted to sit down on the chair and play on the table, the glowing lights are distracting to eyes too~
I still prefer a laptop like Dell Alienware 17 R3 or Dell inspiron 17 7000, sometimes tired can just unplug from the mains and put the laptop on bed or sofa to continue my gaming or net surfing~
Are we able to RAID using one HDD and one SSD in Dell Alienware R3 Laptops since there was an extra SATA slot?
Will there be any effect on the battery life if we using RAID in Alienware laptops?
will the Dell Warranty be void if we DIY changed the ram and HDD?
Wow serious? Really a performance packed range of laptops, no wonder the premium pricings. While it is considered overkill for my own usage, I always have misgivings that it is not really worth that price but I have to say that these few days, after reading from all the sharing here, I realised that alienware is really priced for its solid components.I believe they do.
Alienware 15 has 2 m2 slots
Alienware 17 has whopping 4 m2 slots!
What happen if in future new Dell Alienware laptop decided to have a new connector to the new Graphics Amplifier?
eventhough can upgrade GPU but means the old Alienware Graphics Amplifier system going to collect dust if the old Alienware laptop spoilt?
We have seen Apple removing older connectors in their laptops, not sure Dell will follow suit.
I dun tink 4k uhd is necessary for laptops due to screen sizes, max 18" for alienware range? Really can't see the differences bah. For touchscreen, I also have the opinion that while it is good to have, I still prefer keyboard and mouse for action packed games, hands can rest easily on table also. Imagine hands raising and pointing at the screens for a prolonged gaming sessions. Tiring man.
And I thought Dell Inspiron 24 7000 is an AIO, not laptop?![]()
dell alienware got touch screen + 4k UHD what.
Other than leaking into your bag wet, Liquid cooling system may cause the overall size and weight of laptop to increase, making the portable gaming system more unattractiveI like to see Alienware do a take on slim gaming laptop at 15.6". They are gaining popularity and the other brands have this line of laptops, but the limiting factor of the small casing limits heat dissipation and causes throttling, those with slim laptops have GPU/CPU running 80-90 degrees.
I believe the problem can be solved with more investment in this category. It can be a rebirth of liquid cooling in a laptop because of higher efficiency of water, smaller heatsinks are used.
Dell already have the XPS15 and Precision 15 5000 of slim powerful workstation class, a tweak here and there with cooling and a slightly thicker bottom can work.
The specs of such a laptop should be gaming grade , so a quad core i5 6300HQ configured down to 35W, 2x8GB of DDR4 ram as it is more efficient than DDR3 and GTX 970M, 256-1000GB of m2 SSD, and must include the graphics amplifier connector.

So this week video teaser is Dell XPS, family of this campaign 1st prize XPS 13.
From google, wiki, XPS stands for Xtreme Performance System and the name emerged as far back as 1993 and it was for desktop and tower only till now for laptops.
Surprised that it is considered as another powerpacked range of PCs/laptops along side with alienware. Look like Dimension range are more for the mid to low market?
Some history, just realised Dell did not come up with Alienware, they actually bought over the company in 2006 and it took over Dell XPS line in gaming desktops later on while XPS are scaled down to laptops only.

All these are good to have but not required. Should make it an option for all users.
Previous Alienware 17 R2 laptop offer touch screen but their Alienware 17 R3 dont offer it. I guess people might actually buy the predecessor if they really want to utilize the touchscreen features.
Both of these will certainly affect the long battery life but it certainly can enhance the gaming experience of gamers.
I think most people think that gamers only play fps or those point and shoot games but if you check on steam, there a tons of indie games which people buy and can take advantage of touch features. These indie games dont take up much graphic performance power so then again they may not be suited for the gamers which Alienware is targeting.

i would prefer Alienware to come out with a laptop with very good cooling system becos the heat generated from the graphics card as well as processor would be alot. long term use would degrade the lifespan of the laptop. also if they can reduce the weight would be even better.
That's why i say... boo to the use of proprietary! But i think we got someone in thread here who bought the Dell Alienware 17 R3 so not that hard bah... Anyway, imagine if macbook pro or desktop can use...
How many SLI combos...![]()
Turbo Boost as in Alienware laptop or Dell inspiron 17 7000 ? Or only in DIY cpu system?Just enable Turbo Boost (if it has not already been enabled by default) in the BIOS would probably be the safest. It will run when you set your PC power options to "High Performance". I wouldn't recommend newbies who don't have any knowledge and experience to use Intel XTU to overclock their hardware in the Alienware laptop.
Intel XTU is quite complicated and has a lot of options and may confuse newbies. Better to stick to the overclocking tools which many manufacturer provides like those 1-click tool. Can gain a bit of extra performance also good.
I do agreed on this. Better cooling system definitely will help in laptop performance but at the same time this will increase the weight/size. It is a not a easy task for the manufactures to overcome it. This is the reason why Dell came out this Alienware Graphics Amplifier for serious gamers where it will help to reduce some stress of the Alienware stock GPU.

Like that not only the Dell Alienware 17 R3 can enjoy extra graphics.... Asus, Acer, Lenovo, HP... all can!
Can we removed the HDD and replaced with SSD connected to M.2 slots for Dell Alienware 17 R2?Having 2 M.2 slots is already very well sufficient for everyone. I feel that they could have further optimise the internal layout better to pack slightly bigger battery to improve the meagre battery life or for heatsink to cool system better on the 2 x M.2 worth of space as it seemed more like a slab of wasted space there. Who seriously will uses that many M.2 SSDs there?
