yea now looking at the G5 and the 'Friends' im thinking does LG care more on hardware than software and if they invest so much effort on trying to build their module ecosystem will they still have resources to ensure their software is still up to par.

By software i mean more along the lines of underlying stuff, not the 'bloat' like preinstalled apps or skins etc which is mostly a aesthetic annoyance.

Bloat can be disabled, launcher can changed to 3rd party etc.

But when your G4 gets MM and realise that suddenly now you have a system resource eating up battery (google search LG G4 marshmallow logd to find out), when your SD card has issues with LG Bridge and MTP, those are things you cant disable or shove aside with a 3rd party solution.

I was speaking about G4 specifically.

Cant comment on MM in general as I do not own any other MM devices to compare.

MM's battery on G4 is a common topic that can be seen on reddit and XDA.

The SD card issue i actually went to service centre to troubleshoot. They on the spot took out their own G4 test unit running v20c, tried using 3rd party camera app to take photos. When they plug into the PC, all the photos are 0kb. Said they will investigate. 1 month later, emailed me saying it's simply all the 3rd party developers need to update their apps to work on v20.

I am still using MM V20C. The permission thing you never saw before? I got it all the time on v20. Every time you plug it into the PC there will be a message on the phone prompting to let the PC grant access to the files. Previously there is no such prompt.

When I plug in my phone into my Windows 10 laptop, I do not get any permission prompt in my phone. I am able to copy all my files from the phone to the laptop. All the photos looks fine on my laptop. Could it be a Windows 7 issue?

I was on Win 7 yeah but I dont have a Win10 device at that time so I couldnt test.

However I doubt it is an OS issue because even with the phone literally not plugged into the PC, if I use LG bridge to view the phone files wirelessly, all files created on the SD card by 3rd party apps show up as 0kb icons. At the service centre it was confirmed this was a LG thing cos the service staff could replicate my same issue with his phone, his SD card and his PC

Basically on MM for the G4, everything to do with SD card behaviour just looks weird. When you format it, the directory name is a hexidecimal string and the root directory is dated 1/1/1970 last modified. And some apps keep popping up messages about how they have no permission to move/delete SD card files even though you explicitly granted the permission the same way you grant it in lollipop.

This problem will infrequently happened to my G4 as well. If happened, i reinsert quite a few times before the usb icon came out.

Im pretty sure the G4 got marshmallow pretty fast, before Samsung even.

But look at all the complaints on G4's MM battery life from software versions V20a through V20c, and you'll start to realise getting the new stuff fast may not be necessarily the best thing.

As a G4 user i spend 2 months on MM before going back to lollipop:
- the battery life was just too inferior

- the MM update broke SD card support for 3rd party apps. Any files created on the SD by 3rd party apps were unreadable by the PC when plugged in

- there were literally no benefits of the newer android, except the more granular control over app permissions, and in some cases the MM permissions were so annoying every time you plug in the phone to PC, you get prompt to grant permission for the PC to be able to access the phone.

It seems like battery drain is very common amongst problems for new major android update.

i think its just the developers doing a bad job of optimising all the fluff that they layer on top of android. The most famous example are Asus zen phones, which have 3000mAh battery and their display is only 1080p yet somehow still have mediocre battery life

On the G4, the infamous 'logd' item is system process meaning if you go into settings and see battery usage, logd doesnt even appear there. Its only when you use one of those apps with more detail breakdown like gsam battery monitor that these items pop out in the statistics. I dont even know if they fixed it yet cos i dropped back to lollipop after v20c

With the G5 getting its battery cut to 2800mAh i am sceptical on how well the phone can last in a day. G5 users might just buy a Cam Plus module just for the sake of adding that extra battery life even if they arent shooting photos.

actually thinking of converting from g3 to g5. didnt jump to g4 because my g3 still kicking well.

the most important thing is whether the camera can capture the scoreboard of kallang stadium. g3 cant do it. somehow the brightness of the scoreboard overwhelms the camera.

No, actually both were announced during MWC. But Samsung launch their S7/S7 edge in most of the countries.

Both were announced on the same day. Feb 21 at MWC. The launch date is 11 Mar for S7, and no confirmation for G5 yet but latest rumours are early april in USA/canada. EDIT: LG singapore also says early april but no exact date

SG is a priority market for samsung I think, so we get to be part of the lucky ones who receive samsung's stuff early on. If we were like Europe... remember how they didnt get the Note 5 at all?

deciding between two.

It depends what are your requirements for a mobile phone.

Between LG G5 and Samsung S7/S7 Edge, I will go for LG G5. Although Samsung has reduced its bloatware but there are still some Samsung apps that you are unable to uninstall unless you root your mobile phone.

I am looking at LG G5, Sony Xperia X Performance and maybe HTC 10.

the samsung has a higher capacity battery although we still dont know how much difference that extra 200mAh really translates to, if water resistance matters to you, thats another point toward samsung/

the G5's main strengths are the removable battery and the modules, though the modules could still be a gimmick if youre not really buying into the ecosystem. if you're into photography, the G5 will likely have the better manual mode software and the 2nd wide angle lens helps with landscape photography ...and of course theres the one downside that if you use the modules, then 3rd party cases wont fit

but i think in this age, flagship smartphones have matured enough that you cant really go wrong with either. It's not like in the past where samsung was the only 'good' one on the market
