every app has its pros and cons, i currently use Open Camera, Snap Camera, Footej and Proshot

What LG calls 'autofocus' is what many 3rd party apps call 'continuous focus' and it is the behaviour whereby any motion on the phone will cause the camera to refocus (and thats where I think sometimes it gets problematic). The most noticeable fault is when shooting macro, if you shoot anything nearer than 5cm to the camera, focus is impossible due to the focal length, etc, but if you tap to focus and it remainsblur, the app actually declares a focus lock.

I havent really stress tested autofocus since I immediately switch to manual if auto is having trouble, but can definitely feel that autofocus is not very satisfactory. On all my 3rd party camera apps, autofocus fails to work when shooting in manual. On some apps like proshot, tap to focus doesnt work, etc.

Really hoping LG can fix their camera drivers in an update, so far its been 2 months and no updates yet.

Shame they cut out the laser from the older phones, think that might have helped in focusing.

Guess got to wait a few more months before they update. Is LG slow in firmware updates?

i think they are just plain slow at any update, sad thing is the other brands are not much different

I don't know is it my expectation too high after having been spoiled by the ultra reliable autofocus of the S8 and U11 which never misses.

S8 is still the king of auto focus unfortunately... Nothing beats that dual pixel auto focus.

Not only G6 has slow low light focus. My V20 as well. Seems like LG cameras has had low light focusing. If auto mode shooting is one's primary concern, LG camera is not a good choice.

I still own a G4 that I'm keeping due to its worthless resale value (due to bootloop bad rep).

Though the autofocus is not as fast as today's flagships, I always found it to be very accurate and reliable. That phone is a real camera powerhouse that can stand toe to toe with today's flagship cameras. So am quite miffed when I find that G6 has taken a step back in this regard. Hopefully the problems are software related and that LG can be bothered to fix it

S7/e will be the most bang for buck on the camera department with the same rear sensor as the s8 except the software

What photo enthusiasts think people really want = better image quality

What the industry thinks people want = dual cameras and/or portrait mode

Does the industry really care about photo enthusiasts = no, because the yardstick for mobile photography is 'good enough for FB/instagram' not 'as good as possible'. Theyre not even willing to make phones a little thicker to accommodate bigger sensor


Image quality in smartphone cameras have already more or less plateau since last year. Theres this whole effort about getting computational photography to push image quality further, but aside from the Pixel-exclusive HDR+ i dont really see other brands caring that much either

dunno maybe nokia can come up with something like a new 808, since they now got their patents back from microsoft

Yup, but speaking of sensor, not exactly right, S8 has a newer sensor, almost identical, though not exactly the same.

I agree that nowadays phone cameras have become so good that any improvements in image quality is really marginal. Most flagships are good shooters and have decent low light performance (except maybe Sony lol). But I find that most reviews tend to focus on image quality and not so much on ease of use, consistency and reliability of the camera. This is where phones like the U11 and S8 really excel, cos you can snap a pic in auto anytime, anywhere, and it will almost 100% turn out in-focus and exposed correctly. This is where the G6 needs improvement (the actual IQ is quite good to me when the cam gets it right).

Also, I couldn't care less about fake bokeh and portrait mode, but I really love the wide-angle implementation of the G6 dual cam. Just 5 days into using the phone, and I've already found myself in situations where the wide angle came in handy. Plus, it has decent quality except in extreme low light, and is more consistent than the main cam (no auto-focus issues due to it being fixed focus - the irony lol).

especially things like ease of use can be very subjective. Myself for instance I hate camera UIs that use a fixed-length slider for ISO and Shutter cos you have to squeeze many points onto a tiny slider and the slightest budge in your finger will overshoot the amount you were aiming for

think overall it is always a matter of adapting to the device over time, including getting accustomed to all its idiosyncracies, like the G6 now having issues with ISO 50 for fireworks means having to remember to use ISO 100 instead, etc.

I agree with you that user experience can be quite subjective. I myself hate fixed length sliders that my phat fingers have to struggle to pinpoint the exact location you want to slide to (ahem HTC).

Also agree that every phone cam has it's quirks which you got to work around.

But I do think that phone manufacturers shouldn't make users jump through hoops to get a basic shot down. Certain basic things like having a reliable autofocus, reasonable shutter response, exposure etc should be a given but not always implemented well. And I find that this is not nearly covered enough. An example is the HTC 10. I bought that phone on the back of mostly positive camera reviews, but in actual usage, it was the most frustrating experience ever. Shots were out of focus 90% of the time unless I tap to focus (and even then must be careful where you tap) and shutter response was terrible in low light, leading to even more blurred images. Out of every 10 shots, maybe only half are usable. But this was not well-covered at reviews. Reviewers often show you the good images but the other half of the story which I think they should tell more is how many of the phone's images they have to delete because it's not usable for a review.
