V20 vs G6
$530 vs $600 at telco with plan

which one to buy?
:(
i guess its the 42/mth plan...if so, not worth to get from telco as Street price is better

G6
- Batt life is still the weakest point for LG
- some apps crash despite no scaling
- Wide angle lens is nice

One of the reasons I did not get a S8. The light distortion/refraction/etc at the curved edges. I normally watch foreign movies with subtitles. Drives me crazy when I was using S7e cos the subtitles is at the curved area and I can't read them properly.

LG just broke my record of never been to mobile service centre ever in my life. Got it on 29th, tried to set it up, and issue happened. Refer to https://youtu.be/HqG2vfhJAu4. Virgin visit to the service centre this morning to drop it off. Well, I guess there is always first time to everything. Congrats LG.

So... seems like I am also one of first to have my faulty G6 repaired under warranty for a faulty screen :s13:

Fortunately LG has quick turnaround service, but it is still annoying to have to re-load everything onto the phone, and to know that my brand new phone has already been opened and fixed :(

Seems like the LG QC issues may still be there (for me at least, having had an LG V10 that has bootlooped in the past, an LG watch with screen issues, and an LG with LED image retention issues). The issues of the v20 slowing down after some time also seem to be creeping in with the G6, the camera being a perfect example where it takes a couple of seconds before you are ready to change between narrow / wide or to take a shot.

Sigh. So far having had a Xiaomi MIX, Mate 9, V20, G6 etc. in the last few months, I've been most impressed with the MIX. Can't wait for the version 2 to be launched. The Mate 9 also feels a lot quicker than the G6 on a comparable basis (I have two of them in front of me, with exactly the same content on each).

The G6 also still has basic features missing. For example, the 'night time' mode (that cuts blue light) has an automatic timer on both the Mate 9 and MIX. But on the G6 you manually have to enable it every single night, then turn it off in the morning. Likewise the other two phones have a much better implementation of 'second space' user profiles vs. the G6 which relies on the slow and cumbersome Google profiles to swap between (complete with a mandatory 60 second wait to swap back). It is also worth noting that LG doesn't really have any good VR accessories in place, and despite this being a new phone, is not compatible with Google Daydream. Lost opportunity.

On a more personal note, I am also not sold on the 1:2 screen ratio. In the end, most apps / games don't use the screen estate. And in the end you're left with a narrower than normal view that makes it feel more like the phone is 5". The normal ratio still has benefits, and I hope that this 1:2 trend doesn't perpetuate past the current generation of phones.

In the end, the G6's saving grace is a high quality wide angle camera... and for me that's about it. Everything else the competition can already do, and in many cases, do better.

Just my two cents. You mileage may vary :s13::D

and not forgetting seeing the annoying LG service centre front desk counter staff :D

haha. well, bound to have a few "lucky" ones here and there. So far haven't heard any widespread issue of this yet. Go buy 4D. :s13:

Anyway, found myself liking the G6 surprisingly. Battery life is definitely better than the S8 for me, even with always on display on, and doze works remarkably well. The fingerprint sensor is also very reliable unlike the S8. I turn off all the things I don't need, slap on Pixel Launcher, and the experience is good enough for me already. Performance lose out to S8 or even the Google Pixel, but it's enough for me. Like in terms of doing the basic stuff that i need the phone to do, i enjoy the G6 a bit more than the S8. I also like the flat display more. Not to mention it's also cheaper than the S8 and has 2 years warranty as a nice bonus. :s13:

LG needs to hire better software designers though. it just lacks the type of polish, cohesiveness, and attention to details that the S8 has. If samsung can improve their Touchwiz to this extend, I'm sure LG can too. They don't need to go as crazy with the features, just focus on the ones that people actually use can liao. Hopefully their next one would be even better,

Haha... I don't believe in 4D stuff, probably will let my wife know, since she is the one who usually wastes money to buy such things.

Same thought, but looks like LG is still just another hardware company, hence not much focus on software. Their app drawer L&F is still kitkat inspired designed for whatever reason.

Yeah, they just pulled the launcher out of the G4 i think. haha. That's why i rather just use third party launch or just use without app drawer. But if they want to compete with Samsung or Apple (they are probably one of the few companies that still might have a fighting chance), just doing the hardware well is not enough already.

Swapping from S7 - Some questions

Time to change from the S7. The G6 up at the top of my list, but never having owned an LG before, have some questions (I did try to read through most pages here, so please pardon if already answered).

My main reason is the DAC. I listen to music a lot, currently use an external DAC/AMP but with the LG - probably don't need to lug that around. Thankful to whoever pointed out that the S8 sounds like the G6 without the DAC engaged.

That said, I want to ensure the rest is not too bad. My usage is basic - calls, sms, whatsapp, emails, photos and facebook - no games whatsoever. Plus given Android, I doubt there will be too much compatibility issues.

So the big Q

1. For someone who switched from Samsung to G6 - how difficult was it to handle the UI transition?

2. How difficult is it to mirror the Samsung to the G6 (e.g. I plugged the OTG cable to my S6 and S7, and it mirrored almost instantly).

3. Samsung chargers/cables presumably work with G6? (I know stupid Q but checking).

4. Samsung wireless fast charger works with G6?

Answers/thoughts/tips would be much much appreciated.

With thanks,
TC

yes because USB is a universal serial bus

however fast charging may be another story. Adaptive Fast Charging is samsung's proprietary charging standard. LG uses the more common Qualcomm Quick Charge

I am assuming u r in M1, $42 plan.

G6 - $598
V20 - $528
S8 - $758
S8+ - $888

Trade in S8 at Redwhitemobile $940 (brand new) and buy the G6 for $825 or V20 at $685. For G6 you pay nett $643 and V20 for $503

Trade in S8+ for $1120 and buy G6 or V20. For G6 nett u pay $593 and V20 $453.

If one is paying $598 to recontract for G6 outright, what's the benefit to recontract for S8/S8+, sell off and purchase G6 for $643/$593? Might as well just recontract with M1 for G6

Got to agree with you now m1 got the best g6 deal if you are under corporate that a -$100 for new recontract phone or new sign up + that a 6 months data upsize 50% discount
