Looking forward to purchasing an OLED TV for my new place and deciding between the LG C2 and Philips 806. Sony is not in the list because I can’t bloody afford it. I find myself leaning towards the 806 because of the Ambilight but not sure is it a gimmick. Looks really good though when it’s on display at the shops. C2 is natural on the list as a successor to the C1 and even the panel on the 806 is from LG.

Have read the reviews on both and feel that both performs well but just want to have the best bang for my very limited buck.

Yours thoughts please.

I'm creating my living room to be darker than usual with some soft lights. OLED would shine (pun intended) but just want to be sure that I'm getting the right one for eyes that my wallet can afford.

If you prefer LG's UI, then something to note is Philips is also using Google TV OS similar to the Sony.

Secondly, if you get the C2, you can go to the Service Menu and change the model to G2 and you will get a free HDR boost to 1000 nits. Though you may risk burn in. But that is entirely up to you and you can always change it back to the C2 model in the Service Menu for warranty purposes. ;) ;)

If you ask me, Ambilight has its purpose. But that was for LED TVs. Not OLED.
Because of the grey-ish blacks on LCD TVs, having bias lighting helps constrict your eye pupils meaning you'll absorb less light. So it kind of helps to make the LCD lifted blacks look darker.

But for OLED with perfect blacks, it becomes irrelevant and may cause you to crush shadow details near black because of the eye pupil thing.
But you can overcome it a bit by using the Bright room settings which increases the brightness to compensate for the ambient light of the room if it matters. So that can help to overcome black crush issue with ambient lighting or Ambilight itself.

Ultimately, the choice is up to you. You can either go for more of the same with Google TV OS or LG with its UI.

But I must say, the upscaling on the LG 2022 models have significantly improved. This is coming from an LG C9 to the LG G2.
It made 1080p content looks crisp like 4K. Loving the great upscaling. And Dolby Vision is fantastic too. Basically, you won't have much issues with the LG. They have a great track record for having a TV that just works and gives you great viewing experience.

Thanks for the in depth breakdown. I'm new to this so the layman consumer would automatically go for the best the wallet can squeeze out.

Over here don’t think anyone will recommend Philips over LG.

I bought 8x oled TVs and all are LG.

55 CX, 2x 65CX, 55GX, 65GX
48C1, 55C1, 65G1.

looking to upgrade to 77/83 inch oleds in the future when they come down in price, most likely c4/g4 etc.

You are like a lifelong LG OLED fan.

I'm just looking for better picture quality of course my source must be HD. With the prices now I might just go for a C1 instead of the C2. Now asking around for prices.

I use the Philips oled. 805 version.

the ambilight not bad when u darken the room and TV is against white wall. very atmospheric. can get quite engrossed in movie.

remote control cannot fight with lg. my in-law place use LG and the LG remote so much better. that said, I keep the Philips original remote and use a AliExpress 2.5 dollar one as replacement.

software wise. it's running Goole TV. same same.

pic wise, actually about the same la. all oled panels made by lg. the most lousy oled will win the best qled, mini led and what not. like you I research a lot with rting website , YouTube review, standing Infront of the TV at courts and watching

end of the day advice?
whatever the brand , get the cheapest one for the size u want. they are all the same, good enough.

if u ask me choose again?
I might just buy a non oled but larger size.
something like a hisense 75 inch
those deep blacks what infinity ratio all is crap. u watch movie dark scene all few seconds nia and as if some not so dark area will spoil the movie. a larger screen likely to be more immersive.

I'm glad you don't have the curse ... you can spend less, and live in the joy of not asking for the best.
It's all good..

I think I spent too much on my current Sony and it's not really giving me what HDTV and RTings says it'll do. Why? Because my day to day sources are all of normal definition less when I'm playing PS4.

But you know lah us guys we want the best of what we can afford and then regret later because wallet too light...

OLED has shorter lifespan compare to normal LED TV and considerably expensive than Mini LED TV.

Inaccurate.

As of 2016, LG made a breakthrough increasing the OLED Lifespan to 100,000 hours just to get to half-life.

I am a very heavy user. Use the TV for Gaming, YT, Netflix, movies.
Currently, my LG C9 from 3 years ago barely reached 9,000 hours.
So if 3 years, only 9,000 hours, then 12 years, only 36,000 hours. It is still going to be bright and not lowered to half the brightness by even then.

Then imagine that news was back in 2016 when LG was still using Hydrogen-based WBC panels. Now, LG are using Deuterium-based WBE panels with different chemical compounds for even longer lasting effects. If at most, the longevity of OLEDs can only go up from here.

So your information is probably too old or is based on speculation with no reference.
