North West CDC and the Singapore Mint are collaborating on the Coin Recycling @ North West programme, as part of a community service effort to inculcate the good habit of recycling coins.
The processes of minting of circulation coins involves the use of raw materials which are dug from earth. In the process, raw materials are depleted and a lot of energy is used. The metals are heated up in giant furnaces to produce metal blanks which are struck to produce the circulation coins. Chemical solutions and electrical power are also used, which contributes to the contamination of the environment. With our effort of re-circulating coins, we are doing our bit to reduce such contamination and protect the environment.
Many people keep non-active coins idling at home. These coins can be collected, recycled and put back into use in the economy. It will greatly reduce the need to mint new coins.
The coin recycling period is slated to commence in September 2013 to March 2014 at the following locations in the North West District.
1) September 2013 at Nee Soon Town Council, Blk 290
2) October 2013 at Nee Soon Town Council, Blk 751
3) November 2013 at Nee Soon Town Council, Blk 845
4) January 2014 at Canberra CC
5) February 2014 at Bukit Timah CC
6) March 2014 at Senja-Cashew CC
We encourage everyone with excess coins lying around at home to embrace a coin recycling machine and recycle your coins. The recycled amount will be credited to your POSB account and this service is FOC.
