M1 Data Passport problems

Has anyone used M1 data passport in USA (South Carolina and New York) before? How's the speed and coverage?

not bad. but something to note.

i went Niagara falls.
i kena roaming charges as it auto switched to Canada network, which is not covered in data passport. once i noticed, i disconnected it.
lucky M1 willing to waive. ($100+ charges)

so perhaps u can consider getting a usa/canada local sim instead.
shopee got sell... unlimited data and local calls somemore.

If I remember correctly, there is this roaming lock which you can activate to prevent it from switching to another telco during your usage period. I usually on it just in case... not sure if this helps prevent roaming to another country.

Network lock applies to all the countries covered under Data Passport / Unlimited Data Roaming. But it doesn't prevent you from roaming into other countries networks outside your Data Passport / Unlimited Data Roaming bundle.

Like for example, I'm at the Malaysian-Thailand border.
Network Lock: Malaysia - CELCOM. Thailand - AIS.

Even though I've Malaysia Data Passport, I can just log onto AIS as well to surf the web, just that you'll pay at PPUR / Autoroam rates.

M1 changing of the Thailand service provider to AIS...the connection is bangkok city like Silom area is E 90% OF THE TIME.

Please stop providing this kind of services. No one can surf with 128 kbps.

Is the Network Selection set to Automatic under phone settings?

Maybe can set it to US Network manually so it gets "locked"?

I've been using the Asia package for 6 months and here's my experience

For some countries like Malaysia and Thailand, Using iPhone will require to manual use 3G else it will show 4G but WA and FB cannot use.
No such issues on Android.

Places like Cambodia and Philippines have really bad connection regardless of the phones.
At best I get H+ signal or 3G+ nia.

Its really convenient for me, cos I travel almost weekly and it's a pain in the a55 and expensive if I keep buying local sim cards.

Another plan that I am using for travel is under Maxis (Malaysia) - am using dual sim.
Its MYR188 a month, and offers 60GB data, and a daily 500mb roaming data allowance. If you exceed the daily roaming data allowance, it will auto tap into your monthly 60gb data so confirm no roaming data charges occurred. It also offers unlimited international in and out calls when you are in the markets - ASEAN countries except for Vietnam.
So I've been using their roaming data and international calls even when in Sg. Shiok ah!

So I subscribed to M1 Data Passport for Indonesia for $10 which allows you to use your local Singapore data allowance in Indonesia. When I get to Jakarta it rarely locks on to the local network and when it does by iPhone only connects to 3G. I cannot get any data through 3G. Things like WhatsApp don't work.

Next week I go Bangkok so I subscribed to M1 ASEAN Data Passport which is similar but covers many ASEAN countries. Same problem. When locked on to the local network get 3G only which does not allow data.

Is it M1 fault, local telco fault, or my phone setting? My iPhone data roaming switched on. Carrier selection auto. Always activate Data Passport before I travel. This is annoying because I travel lot for my job and chose M1 because of Data Passport.

Sorry, I just saw this post. Are anyone else having similar issues? Did cashew nut manage to resolve this? I’m having the exact same issues. Did everything right, selected correct network partner, on data roaming. See only 3g. But no data whatsoever. Very frustrating.

The phone you are using makes a difference. I am using both M1 data passport and Starhub prepaid in China. Both getting 4G signals on iPhone but StarHub prepaid gets H+ when switched to Pixel 2... something to do with pixel 2 missing one of the bands I recalled reading somewhere

I used AIS before. Got 4G speeds with M1 Data Passport. Maybe it's your phone problem tbh.

The phone you are using makes a difference. I am using both M1 data passport and Starhub prepaid in China. Both getting 4G signals on iPhone but StarHub prepaid gets H+ when switched to Pixel 2... something to do with pixel 2 missing one of the bands I recalled reading somewhere

WhatsApp no problem. Instagram not sure since I don't use it. Try to lock on to China Mobile over there since they have the best coverage.

Configure the VPN server on your router. Else you can sign up for a paid VPN service.

He’s signing up for M1 Data Passport so he doesn’t need a VPN to access WhatsApp, FB, Google etc.

No worry, M1 Data Passport allows you to access Google, Whatsapp, Instagram. Don't need VPN. I've personally tried before.
