Can M1 data passport be used as hotspot in Japan? How about in other countries?

Is it recommended to get this m1 service or to get those network sim card in japan? Any recommendations? Will be relying heavily on googlemap so i hope for minimal disruptions. Thanks

Get the starhub prepaid happyroam and use the M1 datapassport as backup. Both receive praises and complaints. Not sure it's service issue or user issue :)

the most cost efficient IMO is the starhub happyroam now. The benefits are many fold

1)Ready to use upon touch down as the sim is set up in SIN
2)while u are in SIN, you still have access to data meaning your whatsapp etc still works as per normal
3)unfinished data still can be used while u are back in SIN, assuming your subscribed period is still not due. If say u turn on data plan from 1 April, and you return from JP on 15 Apr, and on 20 April u go to JB for some seafood, both your JP and JB is still able to use the same data plan, assuming you have left over and paid for a 30 days plan.
4)Happyroam JP use 2 big JP networks, namely Docomo and KDDI. Theoretically better than the JP local sim as they are all riding on one network, most of them Docomo's.

$15 for 2.4GB 30days are a steal.:)

Disclaimer: I am not working for Starhub or have any business relationship with them.

So for the happyroam prepaid - i can just buy it and activate on the day i touchdown in jp? Take out my own sim card and insert this and activate is it? Sorry.. no idea how this works.

Okay i read up on it and yeah i do remove my sim card

But i have a question - if im going for 10 days can i just buy 3 times 3-day 1gb and get a total of 3gb for 9 days at $15 instead of getting the $15 for 30-day 2.4gb

Sadly, I think they have this rule of min $8 in the card that I overlooked.

http://www.starhub.com/personal/support/mobile/roaming/prepaid-roaming/happy-roam.html

"Is there a minimum balance required for roaming?
A minimum main wallet balance of $8 is required in your Prepaid SIM for Prepaid Roaming Service"

This will make it nearer to a Datapassport rate of $25+$2, depending on individual.

So actually in order to have 2.4GB, u need to pay $15 and keeping an $8 in your SIM. That's effectively $23. Those that are using prepaid ones, they wont feel the pinch as that's a sunk cost and they can use the $8 anytime, but for us that making use of it just for a trip, hmmmm:(

as long you buy the data plan in singapore first, you do not need to have balance to use the network.
so $8 is for call and sms that is chargeable

I'm going Japan soon and would like to use Data passport. Slightly confused on whether or not data roaming needs to be turned on on my iPhone. Some posts here stated to disable data roaming at M1 end to prevent roaming charges.

On roaming if you're using data passport, just make sure you're on the right network

So far it auto connects me to the correct network, no issues or unexpected charges

If I understood all the posts correctly, as long as network lock and data roaming cap is confirmed to be ON by M1 and I manually set the carrier to NTT when I'm in Japan, I shouldn't need to worry about excessive charges. Am I right?

Not sure about data roaming cap as I just make sure I don't exceed my local data

think there's an option inside your phone to lock down the preferred network determined by your data roaming, so u wont be worried if it connects to other japanese telcos.
