To the macOS pros here, as a new user, what applications do you recommend new users to get?

I feel that this one should be quite organic.

it’s like is there anything you feel irritated about, then look for something that can ease that irritation.

if not you will just be getting apps that don’t serve any of your purpose.

It all depends on your use case.

For example my use cases may be unique: open source projects testing.

Xcode Command Line Tools is the essential app. Homebrew is the most important app, which will provide most of the necessary development tools and utilities (mostly CLI tools on the terminal).

Chrome browser is of course also important as I do not use Apple Safari in general. Then I use macOS built-in terminal application, a text editor (nano inside the terminal, geany or VS Code as the GUI editor).

Most of the time I have Chrome browser and Terminal application open only, then occasionally I will have the GUI editor open as well.

Been using my M4 Mac Mini for just over a week. This thing is stable and meets my needs. Looks like it will last for some years before a need to upgrade.

Anyone using M1 fibre broadband able to obtain an IPv6 IP on a Mac mini M4 or MacBook running macOS v26.5.2, connected directly to the white ONT unit?

Please share the specs of your Mac & how is it connected to the white ONT unit. Thank you.
My Mac mini running macOS Monterey v12.7.6 can but the M4 running macOS v26.5.2 can't.

Can.. I even check the ipv6 can connect recently.

I remb last week?... morning saw afternoon gone...

anyway I sapu a refurb Mini M4 some months back at 94x.xx, now I see same spec de refurb going for 1.2k...

I have a wireless router in between the 2 devices. The ont also should support ipv6.

I asked AI:

Yes, IPv6 will work if you connect your M4 Mac Mini directly to the M1 ONT, but it comes with a major security risk.
Because M1 uses DHCP / SLAAC to automatically assign public IP addresses, your Mac Mini will immediately grab a public IPv4 address and a public IPv6 address directly from the ONT. [1, 2, 3]

Crucial Technical & Security Requirements​


  • No Built-In Firewall: Connecting directly to the ONT means your Mac Mini completely bypasses your router's hardware firewall. Every single IPv6 address is globally routable. If your Mac's software firewall is turned off, your computer is entirely exposed to the public internet. [2, 4]
  • Turn on macOS Firewall: You must immediately go to System Settings > Network > Firewall and toggle it On before plugging into the ONT to block unauthorized incoming traffic.
  • Power Cycle the ONT: The ONT memorizes the MAC address of the last device connected to it (usually your router). When you switch the cable to your Mac Mini, you must power off the ONT for 5 full minutes and turn it back on so it releases the old connection and assigns IPs to your Mac. [5, 6, 7]
  • macOS Configuration: By default, macOS has IPv6 set to "Automatically". Once the ONT resets, your Mac will automatically configure its native IPv6 connection without needing any manual setup. [8, 9]

How to Check if IPv6 is Active on Your Mac​


  1. Open the Apple Menu > System Settings.
  2. Click Network in the sidebar, select your Ethernet connection, and click Details.
  3. Click the TCP/IP tab.
  4. Look under IPv6 Address to verify you have received an address from M1. [8]
