What is the hard disk looking icon on the desktop? It appears after I've downloaded an application (like firefox, vlc, etc.) and I can't seem to delete it like on windows (OS X newbie, lol). I tried eject but I've no idea what that does.

OK, that's the disk image. When you download anything, there will be two icons. The first is a .dmg icon, and the other is the one you are describing. Click on that, and you should see FireFox's icon inside, for example. Drag that icon into the APPLICATIONS folder, THEN eject. It should not come back again after that.
