macbook air or mac mini (boot from ext ssd)

Currently deciding between these two entry level mac mini and macbook air due to budget , pros and cons for both. Will be using it mainly as a second pc at home.

Like the ssd and portability of mba. If buying new mac mini, not too keen in opening up to install ssd internally just in case things go wrong. Since I can't bring myself to pay for a fusion drive, see online that we can boot from external ssd. Anyone tried this before?

I don't think you get TRIM support while using an external SSD via USB 3 though.
Furthermore performance will get bottlenecked.

Get the fusion drive.

Thanks for the advice but due to budget deciding between mac mini and upgraded used mac mini with ssd.

of cos go for macbook air.

mba = ssd
mac mini = hdd

basically the same specs and u get an extra screen for portable usage
