Anyone had this issue with their mac ? Apparently after searching through the web I noticed its called staingate and I'm not the only one facing this problem. Gave apple a call and they said that it isn't covered under the warranty which is quite absurd.

However anyone here had this issue and was able to repair it under the warranty ?

Is it the protective AR coating on the screen starts to peels off over time? Think it's a know issue for the 2013/2014 MBs.

Will a screen protector create such stains? Do you think that this is likely to also happen to the new Macbook retina?

Isn't the screen protector, its the anti glare coating thats been rubbed off from just cleaning the screen.

My suggestion for cleaning the MacBook screen is to use only lens cleaning paper from camera shop. And please just the paper without water or cleaning solution. My MacBook Air 2010 has survive thru time without a single scratches or peel-off.

Happened to my rMBP. You *can* get it replaced, but it won't be easy and you need to be very persistent and convincing.

If you really can't stand it/get it replaced, 3rd party retina screens cost $700 vs Apple's $1.1k. This is of course if your AppleCare has already run out.

This time after replacement, I went with a screen protector. I will never get a retina iMac because of this issue. Imagine a 27" with peeling. :(

I was quite disappointed to see the new Macbook use the coating as well. It's quite a disincentive for me to get it, but if I really did, screen protector is a must.

Not even if you take care of your screen, because others *will* poke and touch your screen. I really have to restrain myself from slapping people who do that.

Just sent my Mac in to the Apple Service Centre, the people there didn't say much however they did say they will take it in and it's subjected to Apples approval to repair.

This problem seems to be happening on mainly the MacBook Pro Retina. I saw a video of a guy however just using the apple provided cloth and a bit of water and the same thing happened

Do note that there will be a low chance for the Apple's Escalation Team to approve your repair.

(Hint: Senior Product Specialist MAY help you cover it under warranty. ;))

maybe you can apply a screen protector after they fix a new display on your macbook.

(prefer matte screen)

i guess the stain is due to the oil residue on the keyboard after typing?

I got the Colorant clear protector from iStudio. About the same glossiness as the old uncoated MBP glass screens. It's not on any website so pics here:

Nubox has the iFreeze series. I tried the matte protector on my iPad Mini, still has some of the fuzziness so decided not to.

Of course, that's because I have the 15" rMBP and only can use their old lineup. iFreeze has a newer series for the 13" rMBP and 12" Macbook which is in Nubox too.

I have the same concerns now after ordered read so many issues with the Retina screen "Staingate" and not covered even under Warranty or Applecare. The problem surface only after months later, this is not what I expected from Apple.

I really hope this does not appear in the 2015 Retina Macbooks, but never say never.
