My mid 2015 one still on Big Sur and it’s the final MBP that can support Monterey, but I’ve not been using it already.

My Monterey update was smooth (12.0.1) and no issues so far, just felt that Monterey is a little snappier.

Anyone tried to install Monterey on unsupported models? There is third party patch that downloads files from Apple and installs on your old MBP, but I am wondering if any side effects by doing so? And what about future upgrades after installed Monterey?

I’ve just finished upgrading my Mid-2012 MBP 10,1 (Retina 15”) to macOS Monterey via OpenCore Legacy Patcher 0.3.1 (OCLP). https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/

Had unsupported macOS Big Sur via BenSova Patched Sur running on my MBP previously. So had to erase boot drive and reinstall macOS Catalina to run OCLP upgrade.

OCLP installation patcher requires a little more learning curve but once installed, runs as close as any supported system. Supports APFS Encryption and OTA updates/upgrades.

Fyi, I first installed macOS Big Sur 11.5.1 via OCLP patcher and did an incremental OTA update to 11.6.1 via Software Update in System Preference. And followed by an OTA upgrade to macOS Monterey 12.0.1 via Software Update.

Upgrade to macOS Monterey 12.0.1 is straightforward on my M1 Mac Mini.

Now the macOS cannot start at all after I tried to upgrade to the new macOS.
Cannot find a way to downgrade back to Big Sur.

gg

Hope you backed up your stuff..

Create a bootable installer and reinstall macOS if all else fails
Try Recovery Mode for Intel machines: https://support.apple.com/en-sg/HT201314
use recovery mode and re-install
Yeah, I was doing that just now.
It works now!

I only forgot to backup browser bookmarks, but thats ok.
