I think ah OCBC precious metal a/c not bad ,
like just now can buy gold dip to $3985 and silver dip to $55.8 ,
rather than wait for UK / US market trading hours as might not get those prices.
Not sure if there is any other better way or options.
The ocbc 2.6% spread is steep , not meant for trading but ok to buy and hold long term
Ocbc charges a periodic fee for maintainence of the acct right? Thats what i dont like abt it.

No , thats UOB charges annual fee. UOB gold takes 1.4% 2way spread , 0.7% when you buy and 0.7% when you sell , plus a 0.3%pa annual fee.

OCBC only take spread of 1.3% when you buy and 1.3% when you sell , no annual fee whether you hold 1yr or 10yrs. The spread can be wider sometimes depending on volatility , but often its 2.6% 2way spread.

They not for quick trade , as it will take longer to recover spreads and become green. But ok to hold long term.

MIG not bad as its SGD hedged , ETFs are still the most cost effective but a bit more headache to deal with usd / brokers app , unlike local bank apps / sgd

I wonder your own definition of so long is how long. Reason being everyday those monies are stuck and losing day by day. Unless you average down which means even more monies put in else sometimes it is better to cut loss and move on

dbs definitely has much higher yield than mii. just like there r many stocks that perform better than dbs.
those bought mii at $11.40 may be under big loss in 2023 but still profit now if consider the payouts. however, the $9.57 can be the next $11.40..
i have been asking myself the same qtn too. i am likely to sell part of my mii to buy dbs.
these are some pros and cons:
pros:
  • mise has no sales charge. bank stocks has trading fees (most brokers have min fees).
  • mise min trade is $1. bank stocks min trade is 100 shares (dbs abt $6,300).
  • mise has mthly div with reinvest option. bank stocks have qtrly cash div.
  • mise has daily unit price. bank stocks share price fluctuates.
  • mise is diversified with 49 holdings, 85% under sg.
cons:
  • mise management fee is 1.25% pa. bank stocks doesnt have holding fee.
(not vested in mise or sgx stocks)
MII has reached $9.30 as of 26 June, I think you can sell some le, if you still want to.
thanks, finally. I just changed my payout from reinvest to cash. even if the price drop to $9.26 next week, I will sell some to buy dbs as planned.

(vested in mii, mise, dbs)

Seems like the reason behind gold / silver price volatility last week!!!
Never heard such a thing.

Major Chinese banks, including the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) and China Guangfa Bank, are aggressively scaling back or entirely halting retail precious metal trading services. Citing severe global price volatility, they are forcing investors to close their positions or face liquidation. Retail investors have been given untill 24th July to close their positions.

I saw the word leveraged. To me I interpret as owning X dollars worth of gold but without the need to fork out X dollars worth of capital. Buy and sell and pocket the difference with a much smaller number than X dollars capital.

Say if no leverage and really fork out X dollars for what is owned is also forced to sell?

Yes , looks like it and reason given is Risk Control.

Even if you did not use leverage, you are still forced to act by July 24.
The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) is shutting down the entire retail intermediary service infrastructure for the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE). Because they are completely eliminating these individual accounts, it applies to both leveraged margin contracts and fully paid, non-leveraged spot products (such as Au99.99 and Au100g)

Option 1: Take Physical Delivery.
Option 2: Close and Sell. If you do not request physical delivery, you must sell your positions back to the market. If you do nothing, the bank will forcibly liquidate (sell) your positions on July 24 and credit the cash to your bank account.

Ok I am not sure about the number of retail and total amount held in Mainland. How about major funds that have gold in their portfolio those are not affected correct? These are institution level and if also forced to sell impact will be much much greater. 🤔

I dont think so or hope not , but I think its more about the price volatility as China being one of the big markets. Atleast can plan our investment accordingly

This is the nail in the coffin for silver. Without china retail horde, silver is very unlikely to recover the high from start of the year.

for gold it will only be slow and steady, nothing explosive

I posted in other thread. If you invest in mutual funds they produce monthly factsheet which will reveal the top holdings. From there you can see the fund managers is rotating to which sector stocks. Just last week healthcare sector has a sudden rise.

No wonder , but atleast your paper loss amt not such that cause sleepless nights , unlike Miraclee23 comment above lost his 30% silver holdings.
Most of you guys here are legit more experienced than me , but I guess just need to avoid panic sell & slow down on DCA a bit , unless really got conviction in ur potential investments.

i was lucky to sell my mig in feb before it dropped. my current holding is promo reward, so lost all also nvm. my mise is for trial and promo, to sell in aug. i regret to all-in my money into mii. thankfully it earns $145 (0.6%) currently. i plan to sell some to diverse into dbs.

It's all about timing and time-in-market. Except MIG, my Mari Invest portfolio is positive. With my current MIG avg NAV at 1.06, it shouldnt take long to recover in future. Minus MIS, total invested is about 100K in the invest family of products.

In preparation for retirement, will now move MII payouts to MIS to start building liquid cash for bridging till CPF Life kicks in.
