In the wake of WannaCry ransomware saga,

Have received some useful information from ASUS TW.

ASUS AiProtection can prevent ransomware.

More information/FAQ ~> https://www.asus.com/support/faq/1012070/

Yes, it can protect against any danger that is known to Trend Micro. Most importantly it must be known to them and updated their protection before the attack come or else . . .

Problems + Problems

Can you describe the "lacklustre 5ghz performance" ?

If you are referring to Wi-Fi speeds/signal strength, different phones will of course give you different results as they can be using different Wi-Fi chips even if they are from same brand manufacturer.

Thanks for the reply! After taking some time to understand the performance of the rma set. I think the 5ghz is still being quite unstable. I have the 5ghz network being dropped intermittently. For example, the phone will just drop the 5ghz network and go searching and scanning for network within the vicinity. It does not only happen to one phone. I have got numerous different models of phone to connect onto 5Ghz to see what results I have got from the various models (xiaomi, apple, samsung, sony, asus, huawei)

All of the following brands are having the same problem to an extend, my question would be what should i do next given that I have already rma the set. Is it possible that the ISP has something to do with this instability? During the testing time frame, I am actually just near to the router. The router is being placed on top of my tv cabinet with no other obstructions near its path. Thanks for the advise again.

Same for me.

About 1.5yrs back from telco.
No issues at all.
Merlin firmware.

Pay so much to rely on merlin firmware?

I am not prepared to do that as the ASUS guy told me that i'll void my warranty if I went on to flash third party wares. Also, I don't really know how to and what to do in order to flash the piece of device. Not a very technical person so i rely much on ASUS making their firmware a flawless one. But still the problem exist currently.

RMerlin is approved by asus tw if I'm not wrong, and he has contributed to the revolution of asus firmwares. Technically yes they are right that flashing third party firmware is prohibited and discouraged, but hey, everyone else is doing it. Just make sure when you RMA the router, make it inaccessible for webUI or you flash back to official firmware lor..

The way you flash 3rd party firmware is the same as Asus official versions no funny recovery mode etc. Further more Merlin firmware is based on the base AsusWRT source code with updated components and bug fixes, nothing too fancy plus it looks exactly the same.

Since merlin will provide the most stable solution as reported here. Perhaps its time to ditch the oem firmware and go onto merlin. Can I get the site for the up-to-date merlin firmware?

Will do the porting over when I am free. Anything else I need to know before I switch my oem firmware to merlin's? Actually this is my first time doing so as I was crossing my fingers all the time waiting for a proper Asus firmware. But it did not come after such a long period (disappointed) so might as well switch over since there are success stories here.

Thanks for all contribution.

Inspect source code if you want to here:
https://github.com/RMerl/asuswrt-merlin

Merlin website here:

Good idea to factory reset after flashing merlin firmware

In ap mode, the ip address changes according to the dhcp assignment of your router. Find out the ip address from your router and you will be able to ping again..
