if u go China, their vegetarian restaurant serve buffet style lunches at very low cost.

something like below restaurant, it typically cost about RMB35 or SGD 7 for a buffet lunch.

the serving is like 5 star hotel buffet.

frankly, they r not easy to find as a tourist, u can use the website / app called

https://www.happycow.net/

to locate all vegetarian / vegan restaurants in the world by the country.

Batam actually have a very lively vegetarian scene. And the vegetarian food there are very good, even better than their meat dishes. Japanese ramen, sushi, nasi padang, chinese style, western style all got standard one. Normally i go there i would prefer vegetarian food because they are much better in standard.

Yes I participated in Happy Cow :giggle: quite actively because it gives me lots of meaning being part of a eco-conscious community seeking green options to our diets. In fact I was in China on a pilgrimage to Mount Putuo and Mount Jiuhua, and the tour agency brought us to many buffet restaurants in their vicinities and we really enjoyed the affordable and delicious vegetarian meals.

Before I went to China, I didn't know that China is so advanced nowadays. It was only when I stepped foot into China as a modern tourist did I understand how much times have changed. These days China is very sophisticated in so many areas, vegetarian food being such the tip of the iceberg. We visited the temples and monasteries, and there were so many religious centres that are so modernised, it's incredible seeing how much China has developed.

i tot 7th month is a taoist thingy?
In Buddhism we call Lunar Seventh Month as the Ullambana Festival. Both Taoists and Buddhists observe the occasion, it's a free for all event.

Dear EDMW,

Usually I don't like to complain, but right now I just had a late lunch and I'm still feeling very hungry!

I am a self-employed, I work for my family business. Every year, my family embarks on a vegetarian lifestyle for more than one month whenever the Lunar Seventh Month approaches, so what I'm experiencing right now are meatless meals for the day. It's not stressful to go vegetarian, but I feel very hungry leh!

I just had a fantastic bowl of sweet potato porridge with bitter gourd, it's delicious! Yet, I just wish to eat some meat. I'm not sure how much longer I can last without going for my favourite McDonalds' McSpicy meal, but I'll try to stay meatless for as long as it takes. I started this thread because it's meaningless going vegetarian for myself, so I chose to share my meatless meals with you guys so that at least I attach some purpose to what I'm doing i.e. not eating meat.

Hope you guys have a good dinner, I'll have leftover porridge and bitter gourd from my lunch so my dinner will be the same as my lunch. My grandmother used to tell me about how they survived on sweet potato leaves fried with chilli and plain porridge during the World War II Japanese Occupation, I feel a strong sense of nostalgia whenever I eat minimal meat and recall the histories that my grandparents taught me.

i was one for 13 years, but i switch back to omnivore for conveniences. Nonetheless i would very much prefer a vegetarian diet. I believe it is just a matter of culture, once vegetarian become easy to access, trendy, wholesome and delicious, not deep fried junks, most people would hop on it.

Many people still think china is a backward nation. I've seen it progressed almost every year, since when i first visit in 2007. Its unbelievable. frogs in the well will get cooked alive.

My sis would also go on vege during 7th & 8th month. Both month full vege. And CNY mth also full vege n all days tat fall on 1st and 15 the day of the month. Now she tries to cut down as the chinese vege diet is badly shortage of protein. She is experiencing fast muscle loss which she couldn replace n regain back. She would not feel hungry like u...but basically u see her face starts to sag due sufficient intake of protein even though she takes soya. As Chinese diet rarely consume lentils, curd , dairy and grains..

talking about thosai, i go to MTR at least once a month on the weekends for its masala thosai. Its damn good.
I did a quick internet search since MTR means train network to me in Hong Kong, I didn't know there was such a place calld Mavalli Tiffin Rooms ie MTR in Singapore: https://www.mtrsingapore.com/

I'm a fan of Indian vegetarian cuisine, I'll take note of this recommendation and may pop by to try out their masala thosai if I'm in the vicinity.

Dairy okay for you?
This question is simple and not so simple. For example, if the animal died a natural death, can eat or not. Dairy if produced under the conditions of suffering vs, a cow living a lifestyle very close to its nature form is greatly different. Thats one of the reasons some people will choose a free range egg over a battery egg. not to say there is 0 sufferings for the free range egg chicken, but it is at least more humane over a hen enclosed in a cage for her whole lifetime.

However, people eat vegetarian for all different sorts of reasons :ROFLMAO:

By now our Singaporean beliefs are a bit rojak la, we mix Buddhism with Taoism and Confucianism, so there's no hard and fast rule on who goes to hell or ghost realm and who goes to heaven. However, in Buddhism specifically, there are clear guidelines on how to practise Buddhist teachings so that we can dedicate merits to our departed loved ones so that they avoid the lower realms of suffering and seek rebirth in either heavens or Buddha Purelands. The documentation is there, but I'm so hungry I can hardly think. Maybe if you are curious you can ask AI such as ChatGPT or Gemini about it, they will be able to advise you pretty decently given the advancements of technology these days.

Yes singaporeans r messy and they do not understand their religion well. Like a Buddhist, in a Buddhist wake setting but going through Taoist musicians and so on.....A PURE BUDDHIST DOESN REQUIRE TO BURN PAPER HOUSE & money! All con by funeral parlor
