My dad went to change at Arcade but apparently there weren't any small notes left. Was given four 1K and two 500HKD notes (rate was 6.0). He said the rest of the money changers there either ran out of HKD or din have smaller notes. Any idea where else still has smaller notes for HKD? Thanks.

Don't worry about the big notes. I had all 1000HKD notes when I went to HK. I changed it all at airport...buying octopus card and some snacks

Airport is the best place to get rid of those 1000HKD notes... Shops usually shun HKD1000 notes especially the small ones. So get rid of it in HKIA...

It is at arrival hall in Terminal 2. I used 2x 1000HKD to buy 2 octopus card at 150HKD each. Went to grab a bite and used another 1000HKD and then some snack using another 1000HKD... Before I know it, all my 1000HKD notes are gone.

I won't be landing in HKI but in Macau instead. Is there anything for me to buy there? haha..won't need the octopus card too because I will be borrowing from a fren. Was thinking of changing in the hotel.

Waiting can be risky, anyway nobody knows how the rate will fluctuate. My suggestion is change half now and wait till next month for the other half. If the rate went further south next month, you can average out and won't lose much on forex.

want to change, change before 16 oct. that's my opinion.
might see volatility in HKD come that date.
may be a good or bad thing. but expect bigger fluctuations.
