I exchanged HKD 6000 when I went for 9 days HK / Macau in November last year. Did shopping and borrowed HKD 1300 from family member. Prefer to use cash whenever possible, credit card for hotel payments.

I am surprise how did you arrive at the 6.5 exchange rate, base on past 2 years reference, the highest rate offered is around 6.36

Last year highest changed at 6.35. Maybe online rates wrote 6.5 is it ? But actual rates is never so high.

Sorry my bad its the year 2011. Base on above graph, I think it was during the 3rd quarter of 2011 where the rate peaked near 6.48 and I got a slightly more favourable rate from the raffles place money changer. I recall changing at 6.5 though.

Apologies for the mix up as I travel there almost yearly for the past decade that I cant recall the exact rate each time I changed money.
