Most of you whom posted in this threads are damn misers.... :D But I have to confess I m not exactly a spendthrift too. I think saving money at the expense of personal wants needs to be controlled but as one forumer puts it, if you focus too much on increasing your wealth and don't enjoy life, what is the point in life? You earn money so that you can enjoy it, not put in the bank or in the proverbial biscuit tin and hide under your bed and don't use it.

I read that some people in this thread will prefer to take public transport even though they can afford a car. I m not too sure how much is their tolerance for the current transport system but all things being equal, (e.g. IF the cost of travelling by car and by MRT/bus is the same, which is not possible but just for discussion sake), I would like to think most will gravitate towards the use of a car for transport.

I do not spend much personally but I believe in getting a car for to me, it buys time for me to do more things, earn more money. I believe in buying time where possible, I also believe more in earning money rather than saving money. To me, earning money is FAR MORE effective than saving money. Of course, when you earn money, you must have the discipline to save a portion of it too.

And lastly please don't eat plain rice with dark soya sauce just to watch your bank account grow exponentially. No point! :D

well this thread is for money saving techniques....... not to earn more money:s13:

What is the point of life?

There are some with view of thrifty
There are those with view of miser
There are those with view of overspending
There are those with view of neither overspending nor over miser.

And there are those who question what are the point of life with attachment to wealth.

Whatever are stressful are not worth clinging.
Attachment are like a chord tie around a cow, not free from his own will. His master whip him and he go left, right, east, south, north west.

It is wise to keep opportunity cost in mind while saving. Don't spend too much time just to save a few cents

does anyone face the same situation as i am ?

when you thought that you have a little bit of saving, some news hit u..
suddenly, i got to go for an op with will cost me abt 3k..
sch fees due nx month, friends wedding, insurance payment etc.. and u r left with peanuts again.

You are not along, it hit me too. I got my additional 13 mth pay in last Dec. Just went I am thinking on how to use it, I got hit by many things. First is the property tax then kids back to school text books and school supply that make me few hundred dollars poorer follow by car insurance renewal, road tax renewal, myself and kids Enhanced Shield plan renewal, Safra living plan renewal, child CDA top up or else there will not be enough money for childcare Giro deduction, paying for kid's 1st term of Chinese Enrichment class fee. Checking my 13 mth pay again, nothing much left. :(

Now you understand why I keep coming back to this forum for money saving idea. :s13:

Same as almost all singaporeans, Im holding a post-paid starhub account.
1 malaysian told me that for the same usage, using a pre-paid account is actually cheaper.
the only thing is u must pay a higher price for the handset, but it is cheaper in the long run

any bro here using pre-paid to save money over post-paid?

As far as I know only the Maybank Family & Friends Platinum MasterCard offers a 5% rebate for purchases at NTUC Fairprice.

Eating moderately is a way to save money. We often eat more than we need and also eat less healthier.

Consider how many times we tend or plan to eat fast food in a week. Excluding snacking on tacos, twisties, cheezel, calbee...kind of food. How much sodium is collected in your body?

I find it no really efficient to cook for 2-3. And groceries and utilities adds up too. Unless you mean parents cook and you just eat. Thats diff.

Depends on what to cook. Not "3 dish 1 soup" type, just simple 1 dish meal like fried rice, claypot rice, curry chicken rice, spaghetti etc.

If you have been able to save up for your emergency fund thus far, do you need to spend as much as 75% of your new money on new expenses and entertainment? IMO the key is to live within your means, not increase your expenses as you have more money.
