TS will need to upgrade his 530w psu, as r9 390 at peak will make the psu running at full or near it's capacity, which is a very bad idea and likely to result in a very short life expectancy.

The system listed on the side is my personal one. The r9 390 is in my bro's newly built comp with superflower 750w.

My MSI R9 390 reached 94 degrees on stock fan profile also.

When I play Sleeping Dogs on Ultra 1440p. It's really hot even though reviews say it isn't. But it seems to be okay running at those temperatures.

Just got to tweak your fan curve and take advantage of the quietness of the Twin Frozr and your temperatures should fall.

yea it's a trade off. if msi sets the fan to be less noisy and temps are higher (but within limits), then there's nothing wrong with the card. Reviews are subjective due to ambient temps, won't be surprised most just use an open test bench.

too bad no one owns the other brands so can compare further.

I feel partly could be due to how the heatsink is designed.. not sure why they place the fins horizontally. The heat is thrown to the side panel

btw, a quick google on Sapphire, PC and MSI of the same card showed the former 2 to have better cooling, while MSI has the looks and low noise. if u ask me, they are all the same with slight variations in performance. perhaps as some suggested, a noisier tweak would bring yr temps to saner levels. After all, they are all aircooled and gpu heatsinks are limited in size, unlike CPU. so there's only so much cooler any of these aircoolers can do.

The DEVIL is in the details, if u know what i mean.

Hahas if i have noticed the heatsink is designed this way i think would have bought the asus varient.

Last night i helped my bro to set the fans to spin up to higher speed at lower temps. Not sure how it performs now.

Maybe shld limit the fps also to try bring temps down abit

This can help. I believe Darksiders 2 (it being a rather old game) is not very demanding on the card, so the framerate might be off the charts -> higher temps.

Is your bro playing on a display with a 60hz refresh rate? Why not try capping the game at 58fps with vsync (I use RTSS and D3D Overrider)

Ya his monitor is jus normal samsung monitor so i believe is 60hz.

He said he limit to 60fps now the temps hit max 81deg. Think darksiders 2 no have vsync option according to him.

Hmm, there should be. I remember it being in the options when I played it last time. If not, force vsync through the Catalyst control panel, sure can. :)

Can force vsync via catalyst. This should bring down the overall temps. Darksider 2 is an old game. Probably it will churn out too high frame rate when playing.

It can go lower if he reduce the AA settings.

While they say 94 temp is relatively ok. I feel it's just too hot. Better to up the fan profile settings by a notch.

Is the 390 worth the price over 290? Since technically they are the same right? Expect for ocerclocking. Like that means better to buy 290?

There is a difference in 290 and 390. Nevertheless the same chip. But it is "optimize" better.

Not just that they increased the vram to 8gb, there is a speed boost of memory clock.

Before, the 290 for most brands have their way of cooling the 290. For instance like msi 290 4gb gaming. It is using the Twin Frozr IV advanced technology. Which lacks a few things.

Such as a lesser quiet cooler, no dedicated vrm heatsink, slightly hotter, no zero frozr tech, etc.

For 390, they improved the cooler by implementing twin frozr V technology. Basically you get a total new cooler from msi.

A larger midplate to cool those 8gb vrams, a dedicated heatsink to cool Vrms. Zero frozr tech, Torx blade is being introduced to scoop up more airflow, and also quieter.

Whether is it worth for you, its up to you to decide.
